Can ,what I believe you called wing mirrors, still be purchased?
A friend is wanting to replace a pair in his mid 50s hobby car. I’m referring to the ones that located with a spring, pulling the base of the bracket into a tapered cubicle receiver
They were never a thing here, as we always mounted the mirrors on the doors.
As a side note, external mirrors weren’t compulsory here, until the seventies and then it was only on the drivers’ side. Anybody who had more than the legal requirement, was considered as flash as a rat with a gold tooth.
Have a look here.
Thanks WH, cant see them there.
This style was very popular:
carbuilder.com/uk/stainless … flat-glass
I’ve dealt with these for various things - nice people they know their stuff, they are just down the road from home.
Thanks cav, that’s not them either. The ones I’m thinking of will rotate within the base 360⁰, in 90⁰ increments.
My Mum had a Morris Minor, which I learnt to drive in. It had those mirrors you describe.

If boomerang is intended to convey that they come back, that probably is the style. It’s a bit hard to see, in the photo, does the arm swivel where it joins the mount?
Side note:
Q: what do you call a boomerang that doesn’t come back?
A: a stick.

The ones you refer to were made by Tex, I sold hundreds back in the 60/70s. Thought the company was long gone but just Googled and they or their successors have a website texautomotive.com
The Desmo Boomerang of which I also sold many back in the day does swivel at the bottom and spring back but if I recollect correctly it does it in 180 degree increments so I think you’re recalling the Tex

Talking of wing mirrors what do you all think of the new camera stalks that have replaced normal mirrors on some new HGV’s, personally I would think if you were a more senior driver and used to the old type you would find it hard to convert to looking at a screen in the cab as old habits die hard and if you have been at the job for a long time you would be looking automatically where the mirrors used to be, we dont have them on our new Scanias so what do you all think especially one who has used the stalk variety, the thing I think is you are not allowed to watch a TV when driving and this system must have a screen in the cab so watching this all the time may distract the driver, Buzzer.

Thanks Bernard, I’ve passed your link on.

Those cameras are another answer to a question nobody asked, like electric park brakes, more faff to go wrong too.
Thankfully i haven’t used them personally (and won’t be, like the driver facing camera its a line in the sand), our lot had a demo in with them, those who used it condemned them as utterly useless which was good enough for the TM who orders the vehicles, so we carry on with mirrors.
Our time served fleet manager is also dead set against them for all the right practicle reasons, mainly yet more crap to go wrong meaning failed deliveres and downtime…equals disappointed customers which is absolutely not acceptable here.
We do have reversing cameras set high on all the vehicles looking down, these have made awkward reverses far safer as you can keep an eye on the blind area and also for anyone who inadvertantly entered the danger zone as you back up, you can inch right up the exact spot safely…wish we’d had those years ago.

I’ve only ever driven with them. Looking forward to trying glass mirrors one day.
One issue with them is the different focal length, as it’s a screen near your face rather than an image at the actual distance you’re looking, you might need your reading glasses rather than your distance glasses.

Exactly the problem I had with them-didn’t even take it out of the yard
Does this come under mirrors■■?
