Can any one remember that chap, I think his name was Tony Walker, based near Middlesbrough, Guisborough I think, who used to fly around the country in his Helicopter looking for trucks to buy and trade. He was in business in the 70’s and 80’s.
It was C.J.Leonard of Slapewath near Guisborough, still on the go .Big Case dealer and 2nd hand trucks.

Thanks, it was not C.J.Leonard, I know them well.
The man I am think once tried to buy Seddon Atkinson.
My memory hazy but I remember this guy featured on local news and I am fairly sure his yard was at same place as C.J.Leonards in Slapewath ,so if it wasn’t them would they know who he was ?

Might be a good idea to contact C.J.Leonard.
Does anyone know of him?
I remember Tony Walker, he used to deal in second hand trucks, used to build trailers (Walker Trailers) Had a habbit of snapping behind the neck. I can remember him building tipper bodies and selling new Guys. He crash landed in his helicopter in a field near Ferrybridge with a mechanical problem. Used to run around in a Rolls Royce we transported it back to Crewe to be repaired after an accident.
I think he had a yard in Thornaby.
the man who owns leonards was called charlie he passed away 3yrs ago his sons now run it

Hiya Marrer as I started browsing your site this evening and before I got to the post about Tony Walker selling Guy’s I remembered that Bill Kieth from Flookburgh bought a couple of new Guy’s and two Walker tipping trailers just before Millom Iron Works abruptly closed my recollection is obviously somewhat hazy but I know I am somewhere near the mark!! Also on the subject of tippers “H” ran some Hoynors if I remember and they were built in Essex and were dropsides that tipped up on their rear axle and the load was usually spread instead of been tipped in a heap!! but Pig Iron which I assume “H” hauled on the outward trip would have slid out quickly so it wasn’t a problem on the first leg but I don’t know what he loaded back to Gods Country maybe you can enlighten me Regards Dennis.

There is a photo of one of his Volvo F86 with a tipper parked next to a Volvo F88 with a tanker, he sold his tippers and tankers by the time I took interest in his fleet, he still hauled containers. I always thought it was difficult finding back loads to ■■■■■■■■ most sub contracting for Robsons and for Brady’s in to Bowaters.
Is Tony Walker still about?

Bewick transport never subbed for Robsons and only the odd isolated back load for Brady’s infact we hauled all the cellulose pulp from Royal Portbury to British Cellophane Barrow (much to Brady’s chagrin) first of all via TDG Western Transport and latterly for Linkflow Shipping eventually Courtaulds closed the Barrow Factory. We were also suppliers of large tonnages of Wood-pulp backloading to Sam Ostle from Hartlepool to Milnthorpe. Our Sub-contracting to other contractors probably accounted for circa 5% of our T/O and more during busy times.Once we got the buisness established our motors rarely ran empty and only then when we were desparate to accomodate our main customers requirements.Bewick.

Hiya “George” we didn’t work as sub-contractors very much as we were usually more than comitted to our direct customers but we did use the services of the odd secondary traffic provider where we were at point “B” and needed to get to point “C” where some of our primary tonnages were located. If you were only hauling from B to C in one direction then a “crap” rate was profitable as you weren’t doing any M/T running then you re-loaded close to point C and returned to where you had started at point A!!One job that comes to mind was our day shifters from Radcliffe could tip 24 ton of paper in Birmingham/Coventry and re-load at Thermolite and tip at Worsley(I think) and be ready to roll on the night shift! Another job I remember was the motors we had M/T around Derby/Nottingham reloaded at Hulland Ward for London which was B to C as previously explained! Both jobs were crap rates but quick and in one direction with no M/T running. We also woked regularly for a firm called Temple Transport which involved returning north with loads of Newsprint to Manchester and last but by no means least we hauled for Reed Transport of Larkfield which in essence was the in-house transport for Reed Paper so they were very much a “main customer” really.Bewick.
Hello George,
Tony Walker used to own Walker trailers, the factory was on Portrack Lane in Stockton. After the trailer company went bust, he had his place in Thornaby where he used to keep his Helicopter on a wheel out platform. I flew with Tony a few times, used to drive used trucks back to old Charlie Leonards place in Stokesley, where Tony kept his used trucks for sale.

Thanks jetstream, I’m pleased people remember him, by all accounts he was quite a character, he tried to buy Seddon Atkinson, I believe he also dealt in second hand tyres.
