Middle lane hogging

What is the cause of m iddle lane hogging, I been watching these people, i think they sit there be cause they feel surcure, in the way of they have an exit if things goes ■■■■ up, they got a lane either side and dont feel trapped,or is it they ain’t got a clue

Worried they’ll fall off the edges.

Probably forked off with people forking about in lane 1

There can be a lot of mistaken claims of lane hogging which really aren’t.IE very low speed differentials between traffic in lane 1 and lane 2.Staying out to make a multiple overtake and/or not wanting to get blocked bearing in mind the low speed differential.Staying out to avoid conflict with merging traffic.Vehicles being overtaken accelerating in lane 1.

Which leaves a ■■■■■■■■■ bunch of those who really don’t have a clue and/or deliberately go out to cause aggro often also the same ones who accelerate while being overtaken.

Just a few of my gripes there too! As a lorry driver I try to drive as safely as possible and also drive to help ease congestion, as in only use a lane other than lane one to overtake and move back in when safe to do so, sometimes I will stay there even if lane one is clear as I know that within half a mile or so there is and entry slip from either a junction or services, so it is safer to allow to traffic to filter on without suddenly slamming their brakes on or not accelerating and then being stuck and causing potential accidents.
I think a lot of people in cars who stick to the middle lane when there isn’t a junction in sight or any vehicles in lane one are just poor drivers and/or poorly educated or are just oblivious to anything around them.
I once had someone get completely in a panic in front of me as she saw her junction exit coming and decided to stop in lane two with her indicator on to change lanes into lane one, after nearly causing multiple crashes she then does the same thing in lane one when wanting to move left onto the slip, probably one of the most dangerous things I have ever witnessed!

This is a good point. You see some cars are in out in out in out because they don’t want to feel like they are lane hogging. They move back in to lane 1 even though there’s another heavy vehicle about 1/4 mile or so ahead. Staying out to overtake that vehicle isn’t lane hogging. Some think it is. Too much lane changing can cause more issues than lane hogging.

Makes me laugh though when you’ve got someone that genuinely is lane hogging in lane 2 and another car goes up dangerously close behind them to make a point when lane 3 is clear. Why not just go round the lane hogging car safely and legally and forget about it? Why follow dangerously close to make some sort of point that the lane hogging car couldn’t care less about.

Is lane 2 hogging mandatory for PSV holders?

Coaches seriously seem unable to move into lane 1 most of the time.

Does some internal warning go off if coach detects it’s in lane 1? [emoji1]

So true! It’s the vehicles that sit in a lane adjacent to an empty inside lane with nothing in front of them or the lane to the left of them for a massive distance and they are clearly not gaining on anything well ahead of them but still decide to sit there below the speed limit causing a hazard to others approaching from behind. What you said about the drivers sat behind that person up their arse and won’t go into the empty lane to the right is also beyond me, there are so many different types of drivers who cause these issues and I think a bit more education on motorway driving would help.

I would like to say though I was on the M6 in the roadworks the other day and lane 1 and 2 were congested and the traffic struggling to get over 40 with the majority of the car drivers not willing to move to lane 3 and instead sitting in lane 2 and an impatient DPD driver in his tractor unit without a trailer hammered his foot to the floor and went to the outside lane breaking the law and nearly took about 3 people out as he was so stressed, that’s even worse in my opinion, so called professional drivers should set an example which this one, and isn’t the first or last I have seen, didn’t!

a few times recently in the roadworks on the M1 ive come up behind cars in lane 2 doing 45 and instead of moving into lane 1 they move into lane 3…whats that all about?

M1 this evening j9/8 5 cars sat in 2nd lane maybe 50 mph I pulled around and went past, ■■■■■■■ taxi cab, driver holding on to wheel like it was going to fall off, other 4 quite happy to sit behind not a care in the world,I’ve had people give me the horn for over taking another wagon in lane 2 , but if your in a car it seems that it is acceptable

Lane hogging is caused by ignorance and selfish drivers who only think of themselves. It is abysmal driving that was meant to be clamped down on as well as tailgating.
Of course the police will take action if you are blatantly caught doing either but as we all know there are not enough police on our roads. Car drivers have half an excuse because most are braindead when it comes to driving and not interested in what they should be doing. Some do as they please and sit in the middle lane whether it makes them feel secure as the OP says or whether some do it to get back at others doing it?
Back home in the UK near where I lived was a busy two laned dual carriageway which has a few steepish gradients. Unfortunately the traffic was usually limited to around 50 ish in the outside lane most days because of lorrys elephant racing. There was hardly a day I travelled on that road in my car that this did not happen. Now I know there are bad drivers in all classes but lorry drivers are meant to be professional drivers and this gets us all a bad name. How strange nobody else mentioned this on this thread because it is lane hogging at it’s worst by so called professionals. :unamused:
If we can’t drive properly how can we expect or complain about others? Granted this did not happen before speed limiters but we can’t get rid of them or there would be even more carnage.

When you pull back in…They still don’t come past.
Forking about near your back wheels…so next time you need to pull out for an overtake…or to let someone merge off a slip road, you can’t.

I had one yesterday going past Corley services. I entered the works just behind them and my usual MO is just going a few clicks slower than everyone else sitting in lane 1 as I cannot be bothered with it all but yesterday I just wanted to get home. Maybe it was the hot weather I don’t know.

Car in inside lane doing 45 and car sat right beside doing the same. I didn’t flash, didn’t tail gate, nothing. I sat there for a while and in the end I gave him a quick toot of the horn and pulled back into lane 1. I slowed down to my usual speed and let them go. Several cars over took me but I could still see them up ahead in the distance. Still sat in lane 2 with a line of cars behind them. Lane 3 was totally clear for as far as I could see yet no one would over take them :unamused:

As I was approaching the M69 I knew the inside lane would clear as many in the inside lane exit the motorway at this junction so I waited for it to clear and gunned it. I took every one of them until I got to this knob at the front of the queue and they pulled over and slowed to 40mph lol.

I didn’t react I just thought, I’m paid by the hour mate it’s your own time you’re wasting. My own fault for getting involved with these cretins

Aye

And 60mph through the roadworks,on the m1

Wtf are they looking at?
Sure…you can understand missing a couple of signs.
But there’s hundreds of them.

Don’t get me started on this ■■■■!

I’m certain there’s a Whatsapp group where people organise teams to sit in lanes 1 and 2 on the North Circular at 10 mph below the speed limit

Friday, M20 Eastbound passing J9 I had a little chuckle to myself. This is the 70mph bit after the 50 mph speed restriction for the missing central barrier and the start of the 60 mph restriction but with lane 1 being warned for distant J10 exit traffic. In lane 2 is a CZ artic which has followed matey through the 50mph section. He is now a little ■■■■■■ off since matey is still at about 50 in lane 2. Matey is driving a red open-top Morgan with ancient suitcases held by leather straps to the boot. Matey is 65+, in sunglasses, with long white hair and a pony tail emerging from under his tweed cap, sat next to him is blonde, 20 something year old Miss Voluptuous, complete with sunglasses and red hairband. Matey was clearly looking forward to events following the unpacking of the suitacases and was completley oblivious to the surrounding traffic.

So let’s assume he was making his way across the Channel for a road trip to the Italian Islands. There might just be hope for me yet.In that I’m only 60 and maybe she’s got a 20 year old sister who’d prefer the more luxurious surroundings of the XJ and the V12 Merlin soundtrack and the more civilised drive to the boat using the A21 and through the country via Rye and Romney instead of the M20. :smiling_imp:
