Middle East Hands

M&C Jamie:
hi rikki,
.
i think when mavetons finished some of the trucks were aquired by don hubbard of gedney hill in the fens.

Is that the same Don Hubbard who used to sub for Davies Turner in the 70’s ?
seem to recal that at the time he held the record for the most Tehrans in a year 12 which in them days was pretty good goin, tho i remember that Biffer’s drivers (Tony Funston) used to take the mick recon he only ever did locals, did happen to mention this to Maurice Gray quite a few months ago when i was going to Greece, and he recons he did (Maurice) more in a year than Don.
Steve

I was going to ask about Maurice Gray, Im pleased he is still doing a bit :stuck_out_tongue:

Is Stuart working with him still? his lad!

Yep Malc Maurice is still going strong, or he was last time i was going to Greece, not seen Maurice since, Stuart is running it now, Maurice is quite happy drivin, or so he says, shame he don’t come on here and tell a few stories, many a night on a boat out of ancona he kept me entertained with tales from the middle east, trouble is i could never remember em in the morning, for a guy who i think he told me once was 74 and is about 28years older than me, he was usualy the last standing at the bar

At 74 he has been fibbing to one of us :stuck_out_tongue: I think he told me he was 70 when I saw him 10 years ago.

I know what you mean about the bar though.

Any of you ex Middle East lads used to know or remember a chap callled Terry Brookes? He was from Birmingham / Solihull area and used to be a regular on the M/E run in the 80`s? A real laugh, very dry sense of humour, smoked a pipe I think? I think he said he had a Transcon at one time, but then again, on the middle east run, so did a few hundred others

I cant remeber who he used to work for but I do remember him saying that when he got down there he used to do abit of “internal” work, cash in hand, until he decided to head back home or until he got a back load sorted.

Another name that came to mind was a chap called Dave Terry, from Essex or East Angla area, soft spoken, slim, grey hair, only drank Coke! I think he used to do alot of Russia in the 80`s.

Just a thought…I worked with both these blokes for a couple of years in the early 90`s.Loved listening to some of their storys.

Cheers, bullitt.

foxy maunders:
hi my name is mick maunders i worked for csa in the sixties and several middle east and european companies is there anyone out there who remembers me.? cheers

Hi Mick,

I remember meeting you in Eastern Turkey en route to Teheran - I think we met up on the TR / IR border. My memory whilst waiting at that border was you telling an Iranian soldier (complete with rifle) that you were going to stick the rifle up his a**se if he didn’t stop mistreating a small dog he had ■■■■■■■ - do you recall that? You were sat in my cab at the time while we were waiting for our carnets to be sorted out.

I’ve got some photos of you and one of your mates (Dave? - bald guy) changing tyres whilst on the dust bowl of a truck park in Teheran customs. I’ll try and upload them.

My name is Brian Williams (from Cardiff) and I was only 25 at the time - driving a white MAN 16.232 & white tilt.

I last saw you on the day I arrived back in the UK from that trip and I was driving down the A13 (near Canning Town flyover) toward the city when I saw a car coming toward me flashing its lights. The driver was you. How’s that for a memory.

I hope you are keeping well and that life has been good to you.

Having worked in transport all my working life, I’ve just retired (early) and apart from a few aches and pains, I’m still fit and well.

Cheers

Billy Butter Bum… I remember his truck was named after a racehorse “Red Rum” and this was often changed…

Can’t remember the names of the Dow Freight guys I used to meet sadly - other than the memorable Billy… Mostly met them at the National
