There was a guy with the same name in T&D last year; sent in a couple of pics of himself from back in the day, en route to somewhere sandy. Drove a Transcontinental. May be the same one?
If it was the budgie i know, he only did about 3 trips for Peterlea trucking,
But knows a lot
well back in those days there wasnt many called budgie
…he was blonde…long hair…and it was the 70s..so it could be the same one..there were some great characters back then..and a lot of camarderie..and i am proud to have been part of it..but how times change..whenever we approached a vehicle (especially if it showed
long vehicle`) we would stop…thumbs up to make sure the driver was ok…if the cab was up…we stopped…regarding of nationality cos we all needed each other…but today there are many who wouldnt give you the time of day let alone have a beer with you…cie la vie…
have a nice day
Just been reading throu this thread again as a lot of these old threads make excellent reading, then Mushroomam mentioned a white copper ,heres me asking directions off one ,not sure where at though as the car number plate is Italien■■?
Klunk
PS. like the pictures of a younger Roger Haywood
Hi Klunk, the only time that I can remember seeing Yugoslavian Policeman dressed like that was along the Dalmation Coast in the summer in Split and Zadar, although I have a feeling that the Italian police wore that kind of uniform in Taranto in Southern Italy.
Here are a couple of photos from Jimmy Walker for bullit of his wifes Uncle Stan but I am not sure where they were taken.
.
And one for Wheel Nut.
I know that the guy in the front is Ken Corrigan but who is the guy sat behind him with the black hair ?.
As there looks like a Norman Lewis tanker parked up in the background could this be you Malc or The Coke a Cola Kid maybe in what could be a parking place in Checko.
Regards Steve.
.
Cheers for that steve, my wife was well impressed! She reckoned he must have been in his forties when that pic was taken so that would have put that in the late 70s or early 80
s maybe!!
Would be intersting to see where that was taken, im sure some of our members will place it!!
Please pass on our thanks to Mr Walker, any pics of Stan are much apprecieated by my wife
Many thanks once again Steve.

Italian.
Anyone know of Les Rivett? I posted this on Astran thread too, but this might be better place for it.

Hiya, a posting on another thread about police in the Commie Block got me thinking of The White Wooden Policeman at Pirot in Yugoslavia.
As you followed the river valley between Nis and Dimitrovgrad you came around a right hand bend and there he was, stood in front of the tunnel. The first couple of times he almost caught me out as he stood there with his little lollypop in his hand. I used to feel sorry for him in the winter, stood there in the cold covered in mud but after a good shower in the spring he alway’s looked clean and a lot happier. He must of been the only Yugoslave policeman who never stopped a British truck. He was there for years so he has probably retired now, I wonder if he got a good police pension or did Teto have him shot. I bet nobody has got a picture of him or does anybody else remember him .
regards Steve.
Dave Shawcross and Jimmy Walker gave me some of their old photos when I saw them a couple of months ago , here is one of them.
I bet that Ron Slater and Martyn Moulsdale can remember where this one was taken, in fact I wouldn’t be surprise if one of them had even loaded at Tiger Tyres in Pirot and I am fairly certain that one of them might remember seeing the white wooden policeman near the tunnel.
The picture of the harbour is Brindisi Italy, other side from main ferryboat loading .
The wooden polis Man on the tunnel I stuck a union jack on it you can check another tread on that story.

I would suggest that is a long time before me as the NLT truck looks more like a 141 with a white cladded tank, besides which my sojourns out there didn’t begin until after Roger and Johns empire had demised. Remember I got D45 from a rental company.
Thanks for that Roger , I never went to the port in Brindisi so I thought that it didn’t look familiar but I was fairly sure that the ship was an Italian cruise liner.
I remember that post about you sticking a Union Jack flag on the white wooden policeman near Pirot and I forgot to add a reply to it but I do remember seeing that Union Jack and one of the reasons that I mentioned the policeman was that I was certain that some of the other British drivers who were running down that way in the early eighties would of also seen it.
I was surprised that the flag stayed on there as long as it did, I.I.R.C. it was on there for over six months although there wouldn’t of been many ( if any ) pedestrian’s walking through that tunnel as it was dangerous enough just driving through it .
Now then Roger, hopefully you or Supercube or Night Owl 33 might be able to put a name to the guy on the right of this photo with his wife ( or girlfriend ) who worked for ProMotor.
The old fellow on the left is my old mate Ken Singleton ( R.I.P.) who I had the pleasure of working with at two differant companies in the seventies and the little fellow is Dave Shawcross son Robert.
Regards Steve.
Sorry Wheelnut , I thought that some of your trips through the Commie Block involved pulling a tanker, was it The Coca Cola Kid ? who worked for Norman Lewis ( or was it Lambsons ) who went to Hungary ?.
You have mentioned Bryan O’Grady a couple of times in your posts, well this old fellow Ken Singleton introduced me to Brian at the Lokeren Tank Wash in Belgium in I.I.R.C. 1980. Now I am sure that Ken told me that he and Brian were in the same Parachute Regiment in the war. I do know that Ken was dropped at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden but I don’t know for sure if Bryan was with him but maybe OVLOV knows something about Bryan’s military service. I did meet Bryan a couple of times in Carissio a few years later and he told me a couple of stories about Ken so I have always presumed that Brian was also dropped at Arnheim.
The truth is out there somewhere

I did do the Commie Bloc for Norman but later on then this photo, we did Poland Czech and Hungary. (Mel) Coca Cola Kid worked for Norman at the time of these pictures I think, as did many other stars, Keith Simpson (RIP Simmo) was an old middle east hand too.

Hi Steve
the Promotor driver looks like a young Micky Twemelow from the Isle of Sheppey. He later went on to be a Subby for Kepstowe Freight and was their Moscow shunter for a time. As he was married to a girl from Moscow,it suited him to live out there. He had a Daf twin steer unit and the roof of the cab was covered in Russian cap badges, he reckoned that there were over a thousand of them and he valued them at a minimum of a pound each and some at nearly twenty. An expensive roof lining for any cab. Regards Jamie.
A Scot Lost in the Valley’s.

Sorry guys just getting use to this posting photos and its not working for me so here is some more photos
Hi, I am just trying out this new photo download thingy so I hope that it works.
WOW that was easy .
Thanks Dave for suggesting that the ProMotors driver was called Micky.
Now I bet that you can even remember filling up your water container in this lay-by so where was this photo taken .
Regards Steve.
Hi Klunk, I have just had a P.M. from Terry Smith who has just got back from Turkey and he has spotted that photo of the Promotors driver and his girl friend. Terry said that it was Mick and Pam and he was talking to Pam a couple of years ago in Sheerness. Mick was working for David Croombs so he probably was doing Russia.
Does anybody have any ideas where this was taken or can anybody recognise any of this lot .
And later that same evening
Goining by the wooden doors at the rear of second pic I going stab at the National Hotel Belgrade I know a couple of the faces but me brains gone dead with the names
Roger Haywood
Spot on again Roger , I thought that the wooden panelling might be a clue that it was taken in The National in Belgrade. Thats just reminded me, didn’t Pevo beer sometimes come in green bottles and sometimes for some reason in brown bottles . Now then, have you remembered where the photo of the old water pump was taken, I have a feeling that Bestbooties will know where it is and some of the A1 ( Leeds ) men will know it .
