MGW of Tractor unit

What is the maximum gross weight of a tractor unit on its own? Would it be the MGW of itself, or the MGW including trailer as per the plate?

As per the definition in The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002

“maximum gross weight” means–

(a) in the case of a motor vehicle not drawing a trailer or in the case of a trailer, its maximum laden weight;

(b) in the case of an articulated vehicle, its maximum laden weight (if it has one) and otherwise the aggregate maximum laden weight of all the individual vehicles forming part of that articulated vehicle; and

(c) in the case of a motor vehicle (other than an articulated vehicle) drawing one or more trailers, the aggregate maximum laden weight of the motor vehicle and the trailer or trailers drawn by it; "

Trouble is i dont really understand what they mean in section (b).

MGW means the maximum the unit can weigh at any time which is only going to get near when attached to a loaded trailer

The actual weight when on its own - the unladen weight - is likely to be about 8 tonnes

My unit weighs around 5.5 tons (1960’s Foden). So could I legally take it on its own through a 7.5 ton weight limit as i would fall under section (a) above (vehicle with no trailer)? Or would I fall under section (b) and be classed as 24 tons as per MGW on the plate?

Unless stated otherwise weight limits go on the GVW not the actual weight

Ok. I have checked my plate and it states that Gross Weight is 13.5t and gross train weight is 24t. So i assume without my trailer I could go down an 18t limit for example, but not a 7.5t limit.
