Came across the old photo of a xmas do at Merricks in the earley 70’s. This was an era when the gaffers put their hands in their pockets for a proper xmas do for their drivers and wifes. Starting from the left, Kenny Ridings shunter, Big John, Bob the geordie, Me in bowtie, Tom Merrick, Trevor Merrick, Jimmy Brown transport manager and a great guy, Arnold his mum and dad had the engineers pub just outside the gates, Nevile Stanley, Mickey Ogan and last but not least Val Sands. Forty odd years ago just wondering how many are still about.

Knew Roger quite well had a few nights out with him in Southampton when he had the volvo. I remember him getting rid of a volvo car and geting a vw beetle he once asked me to get it out of the yard for him and park it at he engineers for him as he would be back late what a bloody thing to drive the pedals were vertical from the floor, drove it 100 yards for him and promised him never again. Not long after we were having a pint in the Queens at southampton and told me one of his children had bumped it, i think he said daughter but i could be wrong, think the beetle was green. He was a nice bloke and i’m sorry to hear of his passing.
