Medicals and DVLA reporting

I overheard some drivers talking, one was saying that when you have a medical, if they find any problems, that the Doc will report it direct to DVLA. I was always under the impression that they record their findings on the form and the driver then sends it + the licence renewal form to the DVLA.

Another reckoned that if you used one of the discount (mobile?) driver’s medicals services rather than your own Doc., that if you did not like/agree with their findings, you could go to a different co. and get a second opinion, then send the better of the 2 forms in. Sounds a bit unethical to me, not to mention expensive.

You can use any Dr you like although if you don’t use your own GP then unless you say something they will not have your medical records so will not know if there is anything wrong

No reason you cant go to another doc although in theory each should give the same info on the form. Unless you have exceptionally high blood pressure at one point then it might be worth getting a second opinion or even doing the medical twice a few days later.

Ethical - depends on reasons.
Expensive - not as much as losing your licence.

Wouldnt use your own doc practice as they much more expensive and could possibly report back to DVLA independently (doubt most would except in certain extreme cases).

If blood pressure was taken following NHS Choices or British Heart Foundation procedures there wouldn’t be as many cases of “High Blood Pressure”.

The whole point of having an occasional medical is to determine your fitness to hold an LGV licence.
I would sooner know if I have a medical problem to get it treated.
Some Drivers must have doubts about their fitness,if they need to go to some length to get a result that they want to get them through, then they are only deceiving themselves
Perhaps, heaven forbid when or if they are ever involved in an accident, and their own fitness is put into question they might have regrets.

Too many people live a life on the basis that nothing bad will ever happen to them, only when it is too late do they discover that it can and will.

We’ve had this discussion many times on here. The driving licence medical is largely a box ticking and form filling exercise, and apart from the blood pressure and sight test, doesn’t really involve much in the way of an examination regardless of who fills in the forms.

If you want a proper medical examination, go and get one done (preferably by your own GP), but don’t be surprised when it takes a lot longer than the 10 minute DVLA job.

Thanks for your comments guys, it seems your thoughts are pretty much in line with my own.

Do they send you a letter out saying oi its time for a medical to keep your licence etc, getting due one.

Yes, six weeks before the licence is due to expire.

That means I’m due to receive mine next week :frowning:
As my license expires 10th January.
Time to go see doctor bling for a £30 medical
At least my new dcpc card arrived yesterday

I’ve received my forms today & Here’s a simple question:
On page 1 of the medical form it asks “Date first licensed to drive a Lorry”
But on my license there are 3 different dates, the earliest is for C1, the second is for C, and C+E being the last. I’m assuming the correct date to put on the form is the one for class C

Is this correct?

Yes, I think you are correct with C.
