MAT were regular visitors to ICI Brockworth in the 80s…
hi skandiahamn, can remember going to ici as a very young boy with my dad, normally a quick tip i think but on this occasion it was over 3hrs & i had to spend it sat in with security, very boring but at least they kept me supplied with milk & tea!happy days regards Andrew.
I remember loading there…and ICI Penkridge (back of the cafe) and ICI Doncaster.
Happy days trying to climb Birdlip hill with 230 bhp.
MAT had a massive contract with ICI and delivered and loaded from their sites nationwide.us northern monkeys covered sites in the Tees valley and the north east coast, Blackpool, Heywood,Doncaster, Huddersfield and I am sure I will have missed some off.We used to tip and load out of Heywood and it was nothing to spend 6hrs on the bay, good point was they had a great canteen and if you were there later they had a club. Funny the things you keep when they’re of no use…when ICI changed their canteens from the brilliant kitchens to vending machines most regulars managed to get cards to top up as the machines didn’t take cash, when I finished on IFF these cards had about a fiver each on them
mat were regular visitors to all the ici works in the uk.they had some good work.they did work for most of the big chemical companys.we could spend all week just loading trailers out of wilton drop them on teesport.5 nights a week parked at redcar .thursdays was always agood night.sometimes park on cannone park go to ■■■■■■■ bars .good days regards mat man.o i forgot the joys of skinningrove.the working mens club the beer was so cheap the sore head in the morning.then missing the gear up the hill haveing to stop and start again in a short wheelbased 2800.

hiya,
Doe’s anybody know where Cliff leader moved to when MATS finished at Hull remember him from there and when he was at Bowkers when I worked there the first time in the 60s, he drove Bowkers first Scania Vabis when I was there i got lumbered with a Scania 80, that’s got nothing to do with MATS I know but thought I’d just mention it, how I hated that motor.
thanks harry long retired.
Hello Harry
Cliff Leader got a job with a firm in Bradford, just can’t remember the name. His lad, Gary was a fitter at Brighton street. He had a girl as well, I think she was called Carol who used to go grass track racing with that misarable bugger Dave Clark and Neil Moor, her car had “Miss MAT” on the roof. I remeber I was in Hull yard one day when a driver came in with a tilt loaded with carpets and the carpets had settled/spred out and caused the tilt to bulge out. Cliff leader sacked him. Hard guy but never held a grudge, he would give you a bollocking and then buy you a coffee. I am sure someone will know exactly where he went but you know he left MAT long before they shut down. He used to talk about his days at Bowkers driving 8 leggers and trailers.
Cliff Carl

I don’t have a photo but I have a model of one. I had it given by someone at MAT Dover. I will take a picture of it and stick it on
I’d say Cliff Leader left MAT at least 25 years before they went pop!
And you are right he didnt bear a grudge - he sacked me at MAT and then sought me out to work for him as a subbie at Leman CCSL where he went to in the early '80’s I guess.
