When I was a kid in the 70’s I seem to remember that MAT ran a Crusader with a polished ally box van trailer, Doe’s anybody know if this is the same company as this MAT and if so are there any pictures out there?
Thank you.
hi bulldog, yes they did have some crusader’s remember them well but as i was very young it seems a long time ago i can’t remember any driver’s names regards Andrew
the george robinson i new used to pull out of catnic in caerphilly opprox 1977 onwards doing all scotch work from armadale he started with aec waggon and drag big fella had a son called ian and another one icanted remember his name great bloke rip george i thought that mat man might b his son long time ago bit confused
guys i worked for george , i was one of his sons mates , eion and graham , sadly george is no longer with us and i can say he was a true gentleman , anything you wanted for the truck he would get it for you , if we got home and me and eion were going down the pub george always gave you some cash , i done the catnic and garadoor job for a while then we ventured into international work mainly doing austria . we used to leave on the 1st january at 5 in the morning , get the boat that night and that was us for around 4 to 5 weeks away , it was a cracking job and george and his wife looked after us well , im getting some more pics in a wee while so i will post them up , the truck in the pic was my one but it written off by one of our other drivers on the a66 , guy in a tipper in front decided to make a right hand turn at the last second with no indicators and the driver ploughed straight into the back of it , the MAT tilt had 3 huge cast iron castings on it and they broke the tethers and came through the front of the tilt and right through the cab , driver was touch and go for a while , he was pinned down in the remains of the cab nasty stuff but he pulled through … heres eions MAN , his truck had a 500 ■■■■■■■ fitted to it then and was some machine , if anyone has any pics of some of georges trucks please let me know , regards gary.

Hullo,
The reason why M.A.T. bought and used those Crusaders was quite simple. They were all from the Oxford depot in about '74 - ‘8O ish. One day one of the Bigwigs from Switzerland, it may have even been Monsieur / Herr Kunzler himself, was having a meeting with their British Leyland Clients, Oxford was a big place for the Motor trade, and with their own railhead was a good contract for M.A.T… Just as they were talking business one of the Scania’ s drove past the window ( M.A.T were into the Scanias ) Oh! … (the meeting went quiet) “What the 'king hell is that thing doing in here ? " Why are’nt you using British Leyland Lorries ?” “You’re working for us, are’nt you ?” Mais oiui / Ja, said the Bigwig, We do have. You will see. And very quickly as in immediately 8 Crusaders were bought and put on the job
Cheers, Archie.
Archie.
That statement is 100% correct. After around 3 years running out of Cowley they got spread around the country and we ended up with 2 in Manchester. The only trouble with them was that Mat did not put a bed in them and the lads used to sleep on bloody great lumps of foam. Old Wooly Back from MIFT had one and drove it like a bloody farm tractor. Good engine, with the R/R Eagle.
