Hi Cliff. He’s just been to see me. I did but keep forgetting to have a look here. Said he mentioned you to Terry. Do you remember the porsche Terry had? Sold it to my Dad. What a shed that was I’ve known Terry since I was a kid. He taught my Dad to drive lorries at Crendon as far as I remember. Dad says Happy New Year to you too. Bit late but better late than never. Tho coiuld just be in advance of this new year Do you remember when MAT were celebrating an anniversary in the 70s and the drivers got a silver clock with a blue face? I’ve never forgot that. Dad doesn’t still have it but still has some wine from the early 80s which was never opened. I bet it’ll be a bit ripe!!! There are 2 bottles- 1 has a pear in it. Then there’s some liquer with crystal in it. I got that from Italy when me and Dad went with Terry and young Terry when they worked for Brian Yeardley. God I’m getting old now. Dad was in his 30s then and now I’m the wrong side of 20! Very much so . I told Dad it would be lovely if you could all get together over a cup of coffee. Best thing for you lot these days I’m joking! Take care.

Nice to see your post and remember me to your Dad when you see him. Terry Shipley was my Brother in law before he and my sister divorced. But I remember John Green very well. Happy new year mate.
Cliff
Yes Paul is my brother. Tho we don’t speak courtesy of his controlling wife. Even tho his mates take the mick out of him for her attitude he still defends her. We were close till she stuck her claws in. He never worked for MAT, that was our Dad, but he worked for Martin Shipley subbying to Brian Yeardley, a bloke from near Skirlaugh who died but I have a pic somewhere, Steve Hewick I think, was an orange Iveco he drove, Ken Matthews, Gilspeed, Neill & Brown, Middlegate and to his shame Stobart . I think he works for Holts at Howden now. Went there when told of the redundancies. Yes I live in Goole. Well someone has to!!! No I don’t know Paul Leighton unless he is a roofer on the sly
mat man:
is your brother paul green he drove for mat .do you no paul leighton he is from newport.he was at mat.i take you r from that area.
The volvo was Barry’s my dad’s was BWF 871K. I can’t remember the damage when Paul was a toddler, just remember having to go to hospital and my dad shouting at my mum for letting him fall out . Maybe he could do with a bang on the head now. Do you know something that I do too The tilt board incident was in 1989. I remember getting the phone call when I was at work. He worked for Gilspeed and Stuart his boss had an accident the same week at Wrexham. He was rebuilding his tilt and fell off. I believe he fell head first and broke his neck. Ended up on life support which had to be switched off. Stuart lived next door but one to us then they moved into a house formally owned by Pete Everingham who was manager at Hewson’s when my dad worked there. Sue still lives there. Stuart did club singing too. Can remember his frilly shirts! Was a lovely bloke. Am pleased that the Globetrotter is still on the go. Nice to see some people not having to have the latest motor just cos someone else has.

Cruella1965:
I’m not entirely sure but I’m assuming that the A. Joynson in this pic may be the same A. Joynson who acquired one of Brian Yeardleys old A reg Globetrotters. It was either 1 reg num above or below the one my dad used to drive for Brian. Was re-sprayed dark blue and I often used to see it on the motorways. In case anyone may remember my dad, he worked for Hewson’s at Howden, United Carriers at Howden, Holt’s at Newport And Bill Malcolmson at Eastrington all before working for MAT. Without asking him I can’t remember the order as I was really young. Do have many happy memories of going with him though. Except for when I trapped my finger in the cab door trying to close it cos I was scared of falling out as he had left it open. Or the time my brother let the handbrake off as my dad was tipping wool bales on a trailer. I think it was in Dewsbury. Was just a tad scary rolling downhill backwards. Yes my dad saved us lol. Or when my brother as a toddler fell out of the cab in Liverpool. He’s always been accident prone. Jeez, H&S would have fits these days. My brother did become a driver and broke his nose when a tilt board fell on him several years ago.

This one is Arthurs and still going strong.
I am not sure whether that was John Greens or Barry Malcolmsons.
Did Paul bang his head when he fell out of the cab, or was it the tilt board that did the damage?
Hi Cruella
I still have the MAT Transport Guiness Book of Records as well. MAT used to go a bit overboard with things like that, the work boots from ARCO had MAT printed in the insole.(bloody hell). I used to twag school to go in the wagon with Terry and before that when he was at sea and I have been on trips to sea as well with him, I don’t supose you can do that now with H&S. I remeber the motors at Crendon Concrete, bloody old QL Bedfords, I remeber being in one and it had metal semafore indicators and if you were going a bit quick they would not come back in again.I do remember the Porsche, it was a bag of whatnots, same as the old Merc he bought. We are all getting older, I retire in June and at times I wish I could turn the clocks back and do it all again.

Hi Cliff. Crikey has Terry got velcro on his ■■■ Bad you skiving! My dad was a sailor too. I think he knew Terry from then to be honest. I call them both the oldest swingers in town. Porsche, white suit, in Terry’s case a harley. Can you get senior citizen crises ? . Me and my sis were both pregnant at the same time when dad had that. We were all going out in it and yours truly had to get in the back. I could have done with a crowbar. Talk about a parcel shelf!!! I don’t know about Crendon cos I was really young then. Yes I was once! Well if you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? At 46 and getting nearer to 47 by the day, as in on sunday, you learn to laugh a lot off. When dad worked for MAT I remember him parking the lorry at the end of our street in Goole and showing us the meat he was taking abroad. Was Frigoscandia work as I remember, think that’s how you spell it. Was decades ago. He used to go to Yugoslavia, Italy and Germany then. Not sure if he went anywhere else but I recollect him going there. I do remember him bringing some Belgian choc back tho. Obviously he had to pass thru Belgium, France etc but if I asked where he was going he mainly said Italy or Yugoslavia. He told me that he used to have to wear his entire wardrobe cos of the cold and, in the days when men were men and didn’t whinge about a satnag not working or that they couldn’t get near to a KFC, had no night heater or bed. What wimps todays drivers are. Tho Dave my other half was moaning yest cos his drivers side window came down and wouldn’t go up and he was getting cold. Aaaaaaawwww bless. If only he knew how things used to be! Tho he did drive an ancient ERF a few years ago. No auto gearbox in that! He was sent to Italy in it. It broke down in Calais on his way back just before he got on the ferry so his boss sent someone out to him, got it repaired and back to Dover then wanted him to turn round and go back with a trailer someone brought for him. He refused cos it was a bag of the proverbial. I worked on the Crendon site in my 20s for a recycling company. In the office that was. It was the 1st building on the right with a warehouse. Something new has been built at the back of the site now. You’ll have to get Terry to drag you round in the van for a bit of reminiscing once you retire. Think he was in Spain a couple of weeks ago. I remember him driving round Felixstowe docks with his feet on the steering wheel. Scared me witless. I can’t remember why but I was in his lorry. Think it was cos we were having a family outing and was a bit of a squash with 5 of us in dad’s cab. Also I remember me and my brother having to hide under bags and god knows what on the bed so he could sneak us onto a ferry at Dover without having to pay. My sis sat on my mum’s knee cos she was only small. He had an F88 then leased from Graylease, as I recall, cos he’d not been there for long. Yeardley paid for driver and co-driver then. Now you can’t take passengers due to a thoughtless woman claiming from their insurance cos her husband had an accident when she was with him. You understood the risks then. Well most of us did! As for turning the clocks back, I think that times then were better. No numpty, as you say H&S, saying you can’t do that. Accidents happen no matter how many suits declare that lessons will be learned or how much they try to prevent them. How about letting us take risks and enjoy ourselves? Dave till the 6th of Jan worked for stobart, a financial decision not career choice as they pay a bit more than others round Goole, and he was forever being told you can’t do/say that. Was told he wasn’t even employed to think. Then ppl wonder why stobart get slagged off. And they’re worse than MAT for those ‘corporate necessities’. We wondered if they did stob loo roll . Pref with the directors faces on I think I may have wound up a couple of ppl on a stobart forum. Oh dear! They’ll get over it. My brother worked there then left when they were told that they were to be made redundant in Nov. Dave waited and got £1600 and still had a job to start at the end of Jan. When Paul 1st started there he told someone in the office that my dad was a driver assessor and they asked if he wanted a job. No is a very polite way of wording his response! There’s a pic on here of you and someone else. Dad asked me to ask who is it as he can’t remember his name. He’s knocking on a bit you know! Better not show him that bit. Btw my name is Dawn. I just love the cruella character.

Paul Leighton worked for Richard Curtis subbing to MAT and then got a job with them. I think Greeny was with MAT too but cant remember whether it was before or after Steve died.
I know this one is not Crendon but these were the trucks they used.

Hullo Carl,
I shall have to have a good think, I believe I can think of a few more. But for the present how about Harry Dobson, Alec Shand, Joe Manson, Graham McNiel, ( Johnnie, what was his name from Peterborough? Big Blond Bloke used to blow all his money gambling on the Ferry). Kieth Pettingale. Colin Clift. Johnny Morris. I will dig up a few more. Oh yes John Hornsby and Me as Subbies. Good old days eh?
Cheers, Archie.

Hullo, I,ve just remembered Tony Jaques who was the Yard Foreman at Brighton Street, great bloke, then there was his son a few years later, Joe Jaques. Then of course there was Stan Warnick, Steve Blakey, Steve Baker (Snake), Ron Hill (Went into the Office Upstairs with Brian Perry) John Ward, (The Maggot Man) Len Terry ( Continental Shop Steward), Derreck Babbs, Arthur Maul. I,m still thinking. Malcolm I don,t know who Matman is, although I may do, I just don,t know his proper name. Maybe he was on MAT later on. Cheers, Archie.
Hullo again, I,m stuck in New Zealand at the moment, so I, thinking upside down. There was also Jimmy Farrell, George Geddes, Norman Olsen, Ken Sleightholm. There,s a lot more I,m sure but it does take a bit of time to remember them all. At the time Geoff Farrer was the big Boss in Hull, Roger Carmichael,s Wife was his Secretary, Cliff Leader was the Manager, Brian Perry was the Continental Manager. Brian Yeardley was there, then went on his own, Terry ? Was the man in the Traffic with I forget who, then came John Birtles, John Stone, and then Joe Fuller. Tony Jaques the Yard man went and Alec Shand took over, he did,nt last very long, and we got Dave, I forget his last name but I know he was from Kirkbymoorside. Now then the old grey matters moving, who was the bloke that came from Arrow Bulk Tankers, I,ll think of it a bit later. Cheers, Archie.
Archie
You have a better memory than me mate but as soon as you said their names it all comes flooding back. I remeber having George (Giddyupp) Geddes at my house when I lived in Farnworth after he had fell of a load at ICI Thornton. After we had eated I ran him back to Hull. He limped for months after that but as soon as he got his compen the limp went I also remeber Derreck, he had moved from Hull and was living in a flat in MK when he died. I brought his furniture back to Manchester in a 30ft container for his wife who lived there but they had split up. I also remeber Terry in traffic, I remeber he was very naughty once and left Len Terry lived not far from me when I lived in Lancashire, he was just up the road in Heywood. Those were the days my friend (I think Mary Hopkins may have said that as well)
