Cheers, Archie.

Hello Archie. Its ages since you posted on here, I was going to send out the StBernard but you would have supped the brandy and kicked the dogs arse out of it. Good to here from you. I eventualy got Alfie to pain the bottom of the door but I never did get a headboard on the old girl.

Hullo Cliff,
I shall look out for the St Bernard in the next week or two, I am in Prague at this moment, headed off later today for Budapest. Then we turn around and head towards St Bernard territory on a roundabout way back home. I,ll bet that bit of paint Alfie slapped on the door bottom knocked old Clarkies Budget somewhat eh ? A headboard ? Asking for the Moon that was, that money could pay for the overtime spent on Grass Track cars.
Cheers, Archie.

Cartrans. 30 feet MAT containers were perfect loading from the side doors but sometimes a nightmare to close. Not too bad if you were side on to loading bay or on a pallet on a fork lift. You could close better using a scaffolding tube on handles.

You are right about Sean Veanables, I drove for MAT at Barking in 1968 driving an Ackinson with a Gardener 150 until they bought a couple of Magaris Dautz, Sean was the manager there until a pallet of bronze went missing one night and Sean got the push, He died in his cab in Belgium

Suttons Tony:
When I was a Trailer Mate on Suttons at their London Depot, I had for a time a Driver named Sean Venables, whose brother was Danny Venables who was the Manager at Archibalds of Leeds, London Depot, anyway Sean who was a lovely bloke and a real character left Suttons and became the manager at Barking for awhile before getting the push for it is said some dodgy business, I have subsequently heard that Sean was killed in his cab in Austria or germany when a gas ring which he was useing to keep warm while he slept went out and he was gassed, a tragedy. Later when I was at the BRS at Hampstead Depot we had a Bristol unit on contract to MAT Barking and I remember loading a container for Denmark at Mars of Slough, I hasten to add the old Bristol never went abroad even in those crazy days…Tony.

hiya,
Olddriver MAT 1968 and Barking, I worked for Bowkers in the years
around 1968, was in Barking depot many times during those times,
A pal of mine now deceased did his work from there, another Bowker
driver London based you must remember John Hemylrick (spelling),
he ran a very smart Atkinson which is still in existence and it is in A1
condition.
thanks harry, long retired.

Here you are Harry, the late John Hemelryk (and that’s the correct spelling  ) photographed with what he called, “My Friend”, in Witton Park at the time of his retirement in 1980. He’d the lorry from new in March 1967, and covered 1.1 million miles in it, in almost 14 years.
