Well, when I was there I was supposed to get my own truck (and therefore be able to kit it out with all my own stuff) but because they didn’t have any spare trucks every week I had to ‘cab hop’ and use a colleagues truck while he was on his rest period, holidays, sick etc. I was also told that not long before I joined Maritime they stopped paying drivers who had to cab hop a weekly payment of £50 for their troubles. Typical, eh?
As you can imagine, it really gets on yer ■■■■ having to kit out the truck every single week!!
It’s not all containers though is it ( sitting around for hours) ,maritime driver who helped me reload ( desperate to get on ) had 9 drops of milk too do,said he does it every Thursday / fri ,very thankful for his help though

Southampton isn’t too bad a depot from my experience. Get onto their website, get the telephone number and give them a quick call. You might wanna give them a trial run.
If you don’t mind doing the hours (and most of those will be in yer cab watching tv or on a laptop etc while you’re waiting!) then you will earn good money although the actual hourly rate isn’t the best around. You probably won’t find another firm with better kit though (I haven’t anyway) and if you tramp for them you must always be parked somewhere secure (usually one of their depots where they have drivers rooms, showers etc). If you do join them, I just hope you don’t encounter all the silly little problems (that need not happen) which I encountered when I was there.
If you go for it, let us know how you get on.
Good Luck mate!
Like any job you have to be willing to take the ruff with the smooth. Iv worked at maritime for a year now so I do have a bias oppinon. Yes I’m a day driver but I don’t want to spend my life in a tin box if you don’t then why be a tramper then moan about it? As far as pay is concerned iv never had an issue with my pay but it is done by each depot so it can only be your planner that has messed it up so a friendly word with him can go a long way. The way it works is maritime do not use agency drivers at all so new starters start as cab hoppers/holiday cover. Yes this can be a pain but do say 3 months of this then you get a new waggon and it will never be driven by an agency driver only a colleuge so you don’t have the dread of what will my waggon be like when I get back. This month iv done on average 9 hour days but been payed for 11 and finished by 1130 Xmas eve. I do think that it depends on your planner as to what your job satisfaction is like but sometimes drivers want it all their way a company is in the business of making money at the end of the day. Plus if you have issues you have the depot manager, driver administrator, driver rep, and failing all that every driver has the direct email to John Williams himself so unless you have exhausted all of these avenues then you havnt really helped yourself. Down side to maritime is it won’t suit everyone you have to do it their way and being smart and professional isn’t everyone’s bag. Anybody thinking of giving it ago I’d say go for it, it’s better to find out for yourself.

Not true in every depot. Southampton will tell you approx. 3 months but it rarely ever happens in that timescale. A guy I know worked for them for two years and had to cab hop for 10 months before getting his own wagon. After 4 months it was taken off him when one of the senior drivers truck went bang and he was back to cab hopping. Apparently the senior driver was on an old agreement whereby they get paid £50 for cab hopping so rather than pay that they take the truck off someone they haven’t got to pay.
He was kept cab hopping until one Friday he got back to the yard, asked for some definitive timeframe when he would get another truck to be told to think himself lucky he had a job with decent kit. He told them to shove the job and walked out. He started with another company and got his own truck from day one, six months old and has it fitted with everything Maritime trucks have.

I went for a job with your lot in Avonmouth a couple of years ago doing 4 on 4 off but pay no good on the weeks that you only do a 3 day week which is quite a few when you look at it so i can’t see that your basic is £600 every week.
Welcome to TNUK .
I’ve been with them on 4 on 4 off days for about 5 months.
My summery is the pay is ok as long as you can get an extra shift in when you’re on the 3 day weeks. It works out that you’re payed 4 days for 4 weeks then 3 days for 4 weeks. Getting extra shifts hadn’t been a problem until after Christmas when it went very quiet. The office staff are friendly enough and as said you generally spend more time sitting round or sleeping at certain drops (next).
The niggles I’ve had are the phoning in every time you arrive somewhere then when you leave. Then there’s the cab hopping which might not bother some but it does me. You are allocated a truck but you hardly ever see it.
I’m leaving them this Friday to go to a place that only does Monday to Friday with 2-3 nights out a week and I’ll be getting ‘my own’ truck which nobody else uses. I’m not doing it for the money because in real terms I’ll be worse off but I just need a more interesting job doing longer distance. Container work is all very local.

How do you have three day weeks working a 4 on 4 off shift pattern.

The pay week is Sunday to Saturday so if your first work day is Saturday you would work sat, sun, mon, tues then be off wed, thurs, fri, sat. So you’d only be payed sun, mon and tues. get it?
I didn’t realise until after a took the job.

I quite like the idea of a 4 on 4 off shift pattern, and for full time work it is one of the main things I look for so I would be interested to know how it works.
I can see how the shift pattern works but I am not quite sure how that relates to actual pay.
Are wages paid as a salary?
Are you paid weekly or monthly?
Looking at it I seen it is a seven week repeating rota.
Days Off Week 1 Days On Week 1
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon
Days Off Week 2 Days On Week 2
Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue
Days Off Week 3 Days On Week 3
Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat Sun, Mon, Tue, Weds
Days Off Week 4 Days On Week 4
Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur
Days Off Week 5 Days On Week 5
Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri
Days Off Week 6 Days On Week 6
Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat
Days Off Week 7 Days On Week 7
Sun, Mon, Tue, Weds Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun
Days Off Week 8 (As per week 1) Days On Week 8 (As per week 1)
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon
Does the rota continuing running through bank holidays etc
Can someone run me through the cycle to show what do you get paid for each week?

Oh yeah, then there’s the Eco driving! All the trucks have got telematics which they take very seriously. Driving a truck with THE most frustrating gearbox in the world, MAN with the ZF boat anchor economically I.e not over revving etc is very tiresome.
