Maritime putting in cab cameras watching drivers

Why would any one want to look at the driver…disgusted and no I would not work for them.I think it may infringe human rights, just one thing after another, years ago had the union opposition to tacho,s been supported all this spying stuff would have not seen light of day.

Oh please, infringement of human rights? How is it spying if it’s not live broadcast and somebody has to physically get in the truck and obtain the memory card in order to download footage? It’s obviously only going to get done to investigate incidents, which will probably help you out if your clean. If my integrity & professionalism is called into question in the invent of an incident i’m happy for the footage to be there to cover me.

DHL on the Jaguar/Land Rover contract out of Hams Hall were doing this two/three years ago. The camera was only active with the ignition on, I was told by the driver trainer that it was only viewed if there was an ‘incident’ and if the lens was covered it was gross misconduct. I walked.

The camera is there for one reason, to apportion blame, don’t be fooled that its there to ‘protect the driver’ because its not. Its there to protect the company. If you are involved in an incident and you are driving less than perfectly you will be screwed. I’m not saying there is ever an excuse for bad driving but we all have an itch that needs a scratch or pop a sweet in the mouth or take a swig of a drink from time to time.

I have no beef with forward facing cameras but I refuse to have one looking at me.

it could be also to catch drivers who smoke in their cabs…and due to excessive complaints, have decided to install cameras…i personally wouldnt want one, but technology is advancing and many companies are taking advantage of it…whether drivers like it or not. One poster said that his company is struggling for drivers, maybe its because of the cameras who knows, but a lot of drivers on here have said they would walk if one was fitted to their cab, i think its over the top, and unneccesary…forward cameras yes…driver facing no.

Was thinking about applying for a job at Maritime a few months ago, so glad i didnt now. If this becomes the norm and every company adopts this, ill throw the towl in and find a new career. Im 37 and been driving a class 1 for 11 years, im sick of the job already as it is. Having to work 60-70 hrs a week and do 2-4 nights out a week to earn a decent wage. And they wonder why no young blood wants to get into lorry driving. This would be the final straw, i dont mind having a forward facing camera fitted…got one now. But a camera watching and listening to my every move…stuff that.

If 100 drivers say they will leave, less than 10 will…

Maybe only 10% would leave, but they are going to be the ones who have no trouble at all getting new jobs, the better 10%.

We have them at our place. They are on a 10 second loop, and only record ‘notable events’ ,like harsh braking, or swerving, and of course any collision . Theyre two way, and also record anything the driver says. :grimacing:
Yes, I have been caught out by it. They have us in the office to discuss it, and for you to give your point of view.

Looking through the replies so far, it seems most guys are a bit concerned. We were as well. But, if you aint doing anything wrong, you wont get any bother.
Ultimately, it makes one more aware of things. Im pretty sure that larger companies can ask for a discount on insurance, as its been proved to have a positive effect on driving.
Who knows, it might even raise our profile?

A few years ago this would never have been allowed to get past the first stage.
I remember when the vast majority of drivers had balls, and would have just stood up and said NO…end of.
Now we have drivers actually ‘explaining the virtues’ :unamused: of this sh :open_mouth: , by regurgitating corporate management bs that they have been drip fed, in order to put a positive spin on things to get drivers to go with it.
They are NOT there to clear you, they are there to catch you out, anybody who either believes or repeats the bs is gullible and naive at the least, and ■■■■ stupid at worst.

We have the cameras that go off with harsh braking on a 7sec loop, 20% will go along with anything 70% of the drivers winged to each other and nobody else :unamused: , 10% actually expressed their disapproval to the right man (including me) but when they ignored us and fit them there are only about 4 or 5 of us that have the in camera taped up.
The outward facing I have no problem with whatsoever, personally I am near or at the very bottom of the leader board table of ‘active events’ every month, so I don’t give a ■■■■ anyway.
There is no way in hell that I would work for a co that had a camera recording my entire day, all you corporate types that have swallowed all this crap, ask yourself what your employer thinks of you, to feel the need to keep you under constant surveillance, and whether they sit and watch you 13hrs a day or not non stop, the ■■■■ thing is ‘there’…that should be enough to ■■■■ even some of you lot off. :bulb:

Well said old chap. I hate the idea of anyone looking over my shoulder (so to speak) it’s sodding rude to say the least.

I wouldn’t drive a truck that had one. I just don’t buy this “if you aren’t doing anything wrong then you’ve nothing to fear” argument. I’m not doing anything wrong when I go to the toilet, but I wouldn’t want to have a camera pointing at me when I’m having a dump.

Harry was that you parked up for the night on the moors  between Holsworthy and Plymouth the other morning.?
Did you have your pet dog with you as I heard from the locals that site was something to do with local dog walkers.
I think the local term for this is ‘Dogging’ although I have never heard of this thing before, not having a dog myself…

100% agree here, drivers have no balls…too many drivers just roll over and have there bellys tickled.
all the big firms seem to be full of these guys now, corporate clowns who feed drivers with rubbish and drivers swallow it up.
No lorry driver should be explaining the reasons behind these cameras and other devices as positives.

What, like this?

Alas, no dogging to be seen…

There will come a day, sooner rather than later, when it’s as widely used as an outward facing camera.

The day Thatcher sold off the council houses and divided the working man was the day any unity went, and the Tory bosses can now ride rough shod over us and do as they please because Unions have systematically been crushed. Like has been said all the drivers will moan … and then just go along with it.

As it goes I wouldn’t have it. No ifs or buts, I’d walk if it came to it.

Hmmmm, id drive naked and see how long it takes them to have words.

The U.K has the most cctv cameras in the world per head. Just another nail in the coffin of our civil liberties and privacy.

And to think that within my lifetime we used to say how evil the Soviet Union was because of the level of state surveillance.

Wow, Thatcher getting the blame for Maritime using in cab cameras :open_mouth:
