Managed Motorway Hard Shoulder Crash M1

It was only a matter of time before it happened, a Fyffes container truck has rear ended what look like a broken down sprinter van on the hard shoulder of the M1 by Luton.
Problem now is all 4 lanes are still open as far back as Toddington svcs so emergency vehicles can’t get through the traffic.
Makes you wonder how alert the people monitoring the cameras fit breakdowns are.
Hope all are ok but the sprinter is a right mess.

I have to agree :frowning:
These muppets playing around with our workspace really should have more consideration.

As you say only a matter of time.

Hope all are OK

I agree that it was only a matter of time but nevertheless the only person to blame is the dtiver who runs into a stationary vehicle. If you are paying attention and driving in an appropriate manner then it should not and cannot happen.

With these new middle lane hogging rules I wonder if we’ll get done for running down the inside lane when the hard shoulder is open ?

Hopefully… I nearly got ran off the road by some ■■■■ who wanted to stay in lane 1 (L2 - Running HS) who was swerving in and out of the hard shoulder as I was passing him on the left

He was more than aware that I was there - I saw this as Road Rage as I nearly ended up on the embankment

Before anyone calls for TNCSI, the footage was passed to the police and the driver was done for DWDCA and I was told that I had not committed ANY offence by undertaking as the signs clearly stated ‘Congestion’ so the undertaking rules do not apply

Rule 163

  • stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left.

Excellent and not before time imho.
Too often see loads of vehicles of all types running lane one only when signs are lit to say use hard shoulder.
Imho driver education is much needed. Years ago we had public inf
ormation adverts on tv eg. Clunk click,Green Cross Man etc. I think we need similar nowadays perhaps along the lines of how to use managed motorways and don’t sit in the legt hand drive lorrie’s blind spot etc etc.

Definately, how many times have you seen cars flying down the hard shoulder (on the M1/M42) when the hard shoulder is NOT IN USE

They didn’t really explain in idiot proof language that the hard shoulder does not run ALL THE TIME, only when lit…

Didn’t they?

Short of placing cones down the entire length of the hard shoulder, I can’t see how they can make it any more idiot proof.

Some people are just beyond stupid and there’s no helping them.

That’s just plain stupidity… I was on about when all the signs are off but that driver should have the book thrown at him…

It’s a vauxhall so it’s probably broken down. There will no doubt be a Fiat further up the road in the same situation :grimacing:

They could make it more idiot proof by returning the hard shoulder to its original and only use IMHO, for breakdowns and emergency’s only, the confusion arises from having a mixed use where one second it is motorway lane and the next a no go area. A recipe for disaster.

^ This. That’s in addition to putting traffic on the exit and entry slip roads into conflict situations, with traffic using the hard shoulder, which otherwise wouldn’t be there.

I had very near miss on the m42 at the nec turn off, I was following another lgv when he violently swerved out of the hard shoulder lane when a car in front had stopped. It was just pure Look that there was a gap big enough to accommodate me at last minute. I swear I was two feet off rear ending it. I was nt to close to the lgv in front either. I have and never will enter a hard shoulder open lane again. They are just too dangerous.

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago on the M1 just south of Luton, 7.5t swerves violently in front of me to reveal a transit van broken down. Luckily there was a big gap in lane 1.

I won’t drive in them again either

Well I for one think they are a good idea and work fine. Just as they do elsewhere like holland.

You don’t just drive on the motorway once a year to go on holiday or visit relatives.

Maybe they can change the signs and use two lanes for a runway and land planes when it’s quiet. That or build adequate proper transport infrastructure for the volumes of traffic in this country.

I agree, let’s just keep building endless roads till we have no countryside left. After all, we all love the beautiful vista a motorway affords.

I think by definition you were too close - otherwise you would have had enough room to bring your vehicle to a full stop without needing to swerve into the next lane.

Quite right lets not spoil the beautiful vista of places surrounding the motorways like Luton and Birmingham.:unamused:

Anywhere that’s got motorway congestion will typically be next to a craphole already.
