hi guys please help me i worked with yuill and dodds back in the late 70s early 80s and vagueally remember an old second hand man tractor unit being put into service that had a column change and if my memory is correct it had a v engine■■? i seem to recall it was a bit of a beast!!! any of you help me out with details of model /maybe pics or something as i cant remember much about it…cheers … any old y&d workers on here remember me (billy m) and my brother (jimmy m) we were both mechanics
That would be a 16:320 or 26:320 MAN, depending on the configuration, it was a V10 and early MANs did have a column change. It would have been a beast for sure
thank you for response so quickly!!! look forward to joining into chats etc in the near future … cheers
My Brother had a MAN 16-232 with a column change, Mortons of Coventry had a load of them also.
I had a Maggie v10 with a column change. V. Fast gear change but always shifting.
It might have been a 304 V8. IIRC, the V10 was launched in GB in 1975, possibly a bit earlier in the Fatherland. Between about 1970 and then, MAN’s top motor was the V8. I do not think they sold it in GB, but this brochure is in English, so who knows? Was yours LHD?
Here’s the V10:
i had a M.A.N 16.232 column change with a electric rocker switch for the splitter when i first passed my test, flat dashboard, by that i mean straight up and down in line with the windscreen, great cab for space i thought at the time, happy day’s. where have they gone?
thanks your pic of the v1o with cab tilted looks very familiar as i remember having to fit exhaust manifold gaskets and they were a swine !!! i was a ■■■■ site younger then .
My mate drove a 16.232 for Febry’s of Chipping Sodbury. That had a column change. It was an R registration.

Hey Anorak, I agree with you because MAN came much later as MB with the family V engines, even MB came later with the V8 ('72) But can’t remember if the V10’s had still the steercolumn gearchange.
And the 304 was a much better performer as the V10.
Cheers Eric,
He said late 70s, early 80s, my money is on the V10.
I remember a RHD MAN 19.320 V10 with a Fuller 13 speed 'box column shift in our yard in 1978…It was around two years old at that time and a real flying machine on the day. The column shift gearbox was a superb installation providing super fast clutchless shifts. Mercedes V6/V8/V10 heads, pistons, liners etc were interchangeable with this engine as it was essentially the same as the Mercedes 15.9 litre OM403, but MAN had an edge in combustion technology and the engine felt much quicker and livelier in service. This coupled with the excellent 13 speed ‘box made it a beautiful truck to drive. I remember drivers’ saying it had no problem keeping the company of a 375bhp Scania 141 on a long . 85mph was not a big problem for it loaded on a motorway. Not a bad cab to live in either and the truck was nicely sprung and very comfortable to drive.
I am sure that the V10 MAN was out in Europe in the early 70s as we used to have a few firms run in to Sheffield depot of Pickfords and I am certain that a 6x4 heavy haulage wagon was in our yard before we got the Scammell Samson as I had got know a couple of the drivers from Hans Franke who had them and they were column change but I cannot recall the the designated model but 32.320 seems to ring a bell then the MAN jumbo was 40.320 which I do remember as we got one later.
We used to get some unusual wagons come in come into the yard Bussings with underfloor engine and even a tractor unit with the underfloor engine delivering or loading machinery out of the warehouse.
cheers Johnnie
P S riverstick I posted a comment on the Vee engine thread of how they were popular on your island
ch eers guys i think i could safely say it was a 19 330 like the commercial motor thanks a lot … as i said it was second hand and if memory serves me it was dark green with black wings before getting a quick y&d paintjob … thanks again
Hey, Here we had the 321 from '79,the 320 V10 was still sold but weakly as before. the MAN performed better as the MB, but much more smokey.
Cheers Eric,
