Wait till the stupid water to air intercooler goes ■■■■ up.Then you start to pay for rods ,liners and just about everything else. And lets not forget the abortion they call the EGR gas cooler.MAN only ever sold this joke of an engine in the UK because no other country would accept this joke as a power plant.
Absolute garbage.Changed both radiators (2),intercoolers (2),mains ,big ends, bolts and gaskets on these pieces of crap at 150 000 km for Hoyer because they got MAN by the balls
If your a private operator the German pigs will do all they can to get out of paying for their crap engine. And the price of the parts will make your bloody eyes water.
Do not touch this piece of crap.

Makes no odds to me or most people on here unless you’re an owner driver, as we just drive the things and someone else pays the repair bills. I still get paid if I’m sat broken down so it doesn’t matter to me the reliability.
Good info Juddian…
But another question that I forgot to ask…
Is the gearbox a ‘learning gearbox’…■■
Does it learn your driving style…?
I have an auto Shogun, and it has a kind of ‘learning gearbox’, so if you’re easy / gentle with it, it then feels / gets ‘lazy’ when needing a gear change. But if you’re heavy footed etc, it’ll change gear differently…
So, like people have said, if you drive it in manual, a maybe ‘teach it’ what you want, will it then ‘learn’ that style of driving…■■?
Man are pretty wallowy but comfy ,In my opinion…This is funny as i just turned down a very decent firm after being shown a stunning black M.a.n kitted with everythingThen Came to the day before the job started to be told your in a poxy merc.No thanks absolutely hate them .Job blanked and gutted tbh .I don’t ever want to do road works or tramping in a merc ever again.Shake & rattle your back to bits …

I don’t think it learns your style in manual, and unlike the Scanias where selecting H or P speeds up the manual changes i never found anything that speeded up the arsetronic change, though i’ve probably got better after over 4 years driving the thing in manual.
I couldn’t even tell you if it learns you in full auto, cos never really driven the thing in auto long enough to find out.
It’s not a question i’ve asked at the dealer, who it must be said are pretty good and i get on very well with them.
The only time i drop into auto is when empty approaching a set of lights or junction i will have to stop at, just before it comes to rest i’ll slip her into auto cos then it will auto select 4th or 5th for start gear, then slip her back into manual for the away, if you stay in manual it goes straight into 3rd as the default start gear, which is sometimes ok but 4th or 5th might be better when empty.
As you know in auto empty either 4th or 5th are the start gears when empty, and 3rd the default start gear loaded.
I get the feeling that the fuelling/power ecu is a learner though, cos when i get back in it after couple of days off when it will only have been driven in auto it won’t pull you out of bed, but within half an hour or so of making it work properly its different entirely, and by the end of the day its bloody flying.
Your Shogun (wish i was a quid behind you in the bank ) will have a torque converter box, no idea if they learn or not, all i know is who to go see for a sub now

Does when the company goes bankrupt because they bought this garbage.

What companies buy motors these days? Most lease or hire them. Well our place does.
Juddian…
It’s the ‘older’ DiD model Shogun…
So wasn’t expensive at all when I bought it 4 years ago…

I have a TGX and I love it…BUT yes I’m having the water problems. I have to keep it topped up and keep an eye on it
They changed my high pressure intercooler (they said it was anyhow but i’m a mere paid wheel attendant, so only going by what they said) in the spring and since then it hasn’t used a drop.

Give it time. That 440 EGR lump has to be a contender for the worst heavy truck engine ever built.
Took mine into MAN…cos it started smoking like i`ve never seen in my life…apart from the coal fired traction engines…i kid you not…couldnt see anyone behind me…anyway they said it was the EGR…fixed that, then they said it was also the exhaust…and they wanted £8000 for a new one…it got scrapped…but i do like the space in them, flat floor etc.ease of handling…but…let someone else pay the bills eh.
BTW my preference;
DAF, MAN, Volvo, or that big american Volvo with all the bits and bobs…and a ■■■■■■■ 16 speed box…that will do nicely.
My order of preference , Volvo, Volvo then Volvo. I did have a MAN around 1991, a 19/462 with MAN’s 17litre V10, worth having the window open just to hear the rumble from that monster hauling…a great truck with that engine…
I am pretty sure the big wheel comes from German regs. Like old Mercs, the wheel is massive so you can still steer if you have no power steering.
Only ever drove one MAN, back in the mid 90’s a 460 roadhaus. Wasn’t keen on it to be honest, didn’t seem to go as well as the LHD F12 400 I had.

The old F12 400 with EDC was a superb truck, pulled like a train and had very little ever go wrong with it. ran mine for two years before buying an F16 470.

Drive them quite often for Saints. Seems the fastest motors on the road apart from the Daf XFs.
My preference
MAN/DAF XF/Scania
Renault
Daf CF
Volvo/Merc
Iveco
Currently driving a rental MAN and I can confidently say it is far and away the worst truck I’ve driven in years! Christmas tree dashboard with random warnings that come and go never to be seen again, ridiculous steering wheel, too many windows is like sitting in a greenhouse, windscreen that looks like it came out of a coach, sun blind with enormous gaps either end, mirrors designed to create maximum blind spots, and last but not least the abomination that is the gearbox that makes every delicate manouvre look like you passed your test this morning and everytime you hitch up a trailer you have to put everything back on the dash. Oh and the fact that box is so slow to react if on a hill you can roll back about 20ft before anything actually happens and truck finally starts gong forward.
But it shows how far trucks have come that even this awful thing is perfectly bareable to drive even with all its faults.
My top trucks would be thus-
- Scania (New generation R & S)
- Volvo FH
- Renault T-Range (Preferrably big cab jobby)
A gap to indicate there’s very little between my top 3 in my opinion
- Mercedes Actros
- DAF XF
- Iveco Stralis
- MAN TGwhatever
The Actros is significantly better than the last 3 in my opinion but not quite up there with the Top 3.
