Man tgx 26.440 vs renault premium 460dxi

poleman:
I had the dubious honour of a Premium 460 today. I think I would rather be broken down in comfort than listening to that rattling engine all day and feeling like a tramp in a bus shelter. Just a bit nasty I felt.

Apart from the looks and cab interior, what about performance?

Juddian:
AndrewG’s 462 mentioned above, F90?

F90 and previous MAN’s cannot be compared in any way to the fragile overcomplicated and relatively gutless things wearing the same badge today, even the smaller engined versions, such as previous cabbed 331 and F90 332 which i used for many years on nights with lightish loads, were pretty well bomb proof, though the whole fleet was fitted with Eaton Twin Splitters which were just about the perfect gearbox to make best use of the rapid rate that MAN engines could drop and raise revs, despite running at speeds well over 70 for hours on end and every tom ■■■■ and harry abusing them by thrashing them mercilessly, plus playing every tune known to man on the gearboxes, they simply refused to go wrong.

Yes Juddian, F90. Im pretty much staunch Volvo but the 462 was a great truck and tbh the overall quality was very good and reliability was top notch and that V10 was epic

rosambili:
What is likely to go wrong with water cooled intercoolers compared to air to air intercoolers?

As others have mentioned, corrosion as the truck gets older meaning costlier to repair, plus theyre not as efficient, some water to air intercoolers are also part of the inlet manifold so as well as 80+ degree water running through it it also has engine heat to deal with meaning the charge air will never be as cool as its air to air counterpart. These type though are in part cheaper to install as the engine can be installed as one complete unit with turbo and intercooler incorporated…

You are right mate… I have always thought so too… water cooled inter-coolers are not that efficient as their counter parts air to air inter-coolers… the engine coolant is hot already plus the engine is still dispensing more heat during the combustion process but I am meant to understand that the MAN TGX D26 engine has an after cooler which is air to air for further cooling after the charged air has passed through the twin water inter-coolers but I am not sure if this is correct, I might have read it some where. I have had a look at the D26 water cooled twin inter-cooler and they look like Aluminium product… so rust or whatever corrosion should not be a problem. I think the problem with their failure would be the thermal stress they undergo leading to metal fatigue. That is the way I see it or am I wrong?
