Hereford bridge accident - man dies, woman critical

Police have confirmed that a man has died after a lorry hit a bridge in Hereford.

The man, who is in his 20s, was believed to have been walking along the pavement when a lorry carrying timber supplies hit a bridge in Belmont Road at 10.30am.

He sustained serious injuries as a result and was taken to Hereford County Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

Another pedestrian, a woman in her 20s, was also seriously injured and is currently in a critical condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Road closures are still in place and are expected to last until late afternoon.

Police press officer Toby Shergold said: "Our officers continue to work at the scene as they piece together exactly what happened in this unfortunate incident and we ask the public’s patience as they deal with the inevitable traffic disruption around the city of Hereford

Nasty. I came thru Hereford earlier and was wondering why the road was closed.

Pedestrian killed in timber spill
A woman who was seriously injured when a lorry shed a load of timber building supplies in Herefordshire has died.

It follows the death of a man, aged in his 20s, in the incident as the pair walked along Belmont Road, Hereford, on Monday morning.

The heavy goods vehicle shed its load close to the railway bridge.

Police said the driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail while the investigation continued.

The woman, also in her 20s, was taken by air ambulance to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a critical condition, but she died on Monday evening.

A total tragedy for all concerned and easily avoided I would have thought. There’s a much lower bridge than that 16 footer a few miles further out with a real railway on it but no pedestrians around (this is all assuming it was a bridge strike). Dunno how far he expected to go with a load that height; I presume there’s no law against driving with a load over 16ft (or 16’ 6’') (I mean in terms of special safety measures) but it would take a bit of careful planning, for even what may have been a very short trip has ended in disaster (it looks like a local lorry).

Gammonds whose lorry it was are local to hereford. so much so their depot is only 2 -3 miles from accident (prob not even that). I see their trucks daily, and seem to carry unusually sized loads. I run out of Hereford for CEVA, and I have heard rumours that the load had moved prior to the bridge, and motorists had tried in vain to warn the driver. Either way if it was a bridge strike, or the load moved the driver is going to be under serious legal scrutiny - arrested for death by dangerous driving.

So it was a sideways bridge strike? Particularly nasty in this instance (if it was).

Just read that these two people were a couple and had just dropped there son off at nursery, poor lad

It looks like it was carrying roof trusses.

A terrible story, condolences to the families of the victims.
