MAN auto.

we`ve got some MAN 440 auto coming in the very near future. What do people think of them and any tips please.

I really like them but im biased as i had a 07 plate for 2 years and loved it but…they are very hesitant when you pull away, this can be quite a problem when pulling away at a roundabout with limited views, you push the pedal and it has to think about it by which time the gap has gone and your left in no mans land, once you get used to it you will know how much room you need. The cab is quite roomy and the bunk is nice and wide if maybe a bit thin, they pull well enough but the auto box does like to hold the gear rather changing down (our demo driver called it ‘Black power’),best of luck with yours

after driving a wagon with a proper gearbox all my driving career i thought i had made a mistake buying a MAN but i have to say in all honesty i dont think i would ever go back to a manual , albeit a MAN is the only auto i,ve had but they cant be that bad as i,ve just bought another 1 , just be patient and learn to anticipate at roundabouts {ie set off a fraction before you normally would, you will see what i mean} and you wont go wrong with it

I drove a 440 auto for 11 months I thought they were quite good they do tend to shift down to early when you use the exhaust brake and they sometimes choose the wrong gear to pull away apart from that pretty good. We have some auto backsores and they are un driveable in auto total junk!!!

I’ve had one for about twelve months and I think it’s brilliant. You can drive it in manual if you wish but it’s piontless. What is useful is you can override the auto and it will return to auto after a few seconds. I take heavy boxes over Woodhead quite often and it’s handy when approaching a hill just to knock it down a cog or two as it can’t anticipate the slope as soon as you hit the hill it will sort itself out. The crawler gear for manouvering is good, two gears in reverse.

As the others have said, very hesitant, but are very good and strong when you get going.

Don’t expect to do speedy turn arounds either as going from forward to reverse is something that needs to be done steadily otherwise it wont engage, as is going back to forward drive.

They roll back aswell. Say you are at a junction, on a gradient. As you go from brake to accelerator, it will roll back before engaging the gear, so use your handbrake. The hand brake comes is handy for the “shoot out” scenario aswell. Roundabouts? Just aim for the car in front of the gap you want, you’ll not hit it by the time you are moving

A friend of mine has a new TGX 480 auto. The truck is a massive improvement over the old cruddy TGA’s nice to drive and sit in the auto is very good. Only downside is th buttons on the steering get in your way.

I drove one for two years and feel pretty much the same as the other posters. Be patient when changing from forward to reverse and vice versa - it won’t be rushed! And ensure you send it a written invitation to pull out at a roundabout :unamused: Other than that - great!

as Grumpy told me some tips on it
i’ll go with what she said

Very slightly off topic but hey-ho;

I’ve driven three man 7.5t auto’s and they’ve all had the same problem, you set off at a roundabout, foot to the floor trying to get out quick and it takes its time, eventually you’re not doing too bad (not accelerating really hard but going nicely) and it kicks it down into a gear that’s too low really. that’s no problem really until it rains; the back end steps out, especially if you’re empty or light. I nearly hit a van because of this - I was turning right at the roundabout and the van was going straight on and was to my left, alongside the rear of the truck, it kicked down and out the back end went which very nearly hit the van. How do you argue it wasn’t your fualt!?

I assume the bigger trucks are better because of the weight if nothing else but something worth watching out for. As for D to R, have a coffee - this may take a while

just been drivin the MAN 320 auto was nice & easy you will soon get used to it ( i did & 1st time driven an auto) with 2 reverse gears was nice

went up through the gears nice & smooth also came down nice & smooth did override it a couple of times for the hills but then it did return to auto as has been said

i didnt really have a prob pullin away at roundabouts ect but then that could have been just me :unamused: the only other prob i had was with all the other controls on the steering wheel :unamused: and of course the usual blind spots for me as i suffer from duck disease   :unamused:

sit back and enjoy

The company I work for has just sent a load of Iveco’s back at the end of their lease and taken on some hire trucks until they decide what to get next.

Running alongside Merc Actros, Merc Axor, Renault Premium, DAF XF and DAF CF, the MAN is the most popular truck on the fleet, with drivers even turning in early to get their hands on it.

It’s looking like MAN will be the favourite for the pending fleet replacement.

Use the manual option

Use the manual option

Whats a manual gearbox? :unamused: …its been that long since I`ve see 1

When a particular person is in the office I always get a MAN held back for me, cos they know how much I like to spend every night out in a man  :grimacing:

the only MAN that i will get into

do the 7.5t have the same feature as the bigger auto,s ie you push the pedal right to the floor and then a bit more and the kickdown comes in and puts you in a lower gear than you ought to be in, caught me out a few times i can tell you, especially when a nice bit of totty drove past, i,d see the legs, floor the accelerator and it would change down 2 gears

I drove an auto 7.5tonne over the winter, and I have to say it was one of the nicest trucks I’ve ever sat in!

I found the best way to get it moving off smoothly (I transport horses) was to just give a bit of throttle and it would sort itself out, then start to accelorate. I also found it worked a bit like the iShift, when you want to change up you lift off and it just sort of did it

I drive the TGA 430, i think its great, as for the lag, i find it worse when your just about to go through a junction or round a bout, and your forced to break, then go when numpty car driver realizes he has indicators. Thats when i get stranded in mine.

Cheers for the info, just got to wait for them to turn up now.
