I am researching my family tree, and I found a picture of my grandads fuel tanker, with the logo MAJOR on:
However, I have been unable to find out much about this company, or where my Grandad might have worked, except that he worked locally in the Hunslet area. Any one able to shed some light on this company?
There was an oil terminal around there in the 70s most of the oil company’s pulled out of there Texaco, Shell, Fina, Mobil and Shaws Fuels I will remember the road later so it should be posted tomorrow.
cheers Johnnie

Here is your Grandads first lorry.
Seriously have a look at leodis.org or Secret Leeds where you can ask questions from old Leedsonians
There was an oil terminal at Hunslet along with a steel stockyard. All the oil was transported there from Paul by barge. The nearest oil terminal now is Lemonroyd, just outside Leeds. The Butlers terminal at Castleford no longer gets its fuel by barge. The terminal at Lemonroyde is serviced by barges from the Rix fleet.
Aha, Yes, there was more than one terminal in Hunslet. Shell had a large operation, their own vehicles plus National and a few others. Regent had a terminal, and Phillips had a fair sized terminal (I pulled many a load out of there), Total, they had a bigish fleet. The terminals were well based in Hunslet, they could be accessed/fed by rail AND canal barge from the East coast refineries.ALL accessed from Sth. Accommodation Road.
Major were indeed a Hull outfit but they had a few vehicles based up Sth Accom. Road and I’m almost certain they used the Phillips terminal .
I hope that helps

Yea,i was on contract to Phillips North tees, and loaded out of Sth Accommodion rd on the times that i was in that area, there fuel was transported by rail from n/tees until later when it all went by road and was trunked down and delivered direct, doing away with the use of a terminal.Stiller got the contract involving numerous tanks and units.Vic. P.S.This all happened later 80s 90s.
I can remember MAJOR OIL COMPANY being on northgate newark nottinghamshire in the mid 60s.My friends dad used to drive for them.
I have asked if he has any old photos of his late dad with any lorries from major oils but he dosent have any.The colour sceme of the
tankers was BLUE and YELLOW. Hope this info is of use to you Nigel Hunt.
Here’s a model of one I put on my Diorama, produced by E.F.E. in OO gauge. As the setting is based in the Thames Valley area, end of '60s I doubt it would have been seen there, but it has a sort of sideways significance to me!

I can see a resemblance to Chris’s Transport Cafe at Studley Green.
