Magnum

Hello, I need a unit for work up and down my local ind estate, and have came across a 2004 magnum 440, manual 4x2. Going to have a look at it tomoro so can anyone give me any pointers on what to keep an eye out for as I don’t have any experience on them, feel free to take the p*ss but some constructive answers would be appreciated… Cheers.

Not sure a Magnum would be my 1st choice as an Industrial Estate shunter!!!

Ok Big Truck, most of the loads are wide so was thinking the extra height would give better visibility,■■

Cant be much help on this but my dad absolutely will not part with his 2007 magnum. Volvo everything and utterly reliable plus high vantage.
Hope it goes well my friend

If it starts and runs ok, doesn’t make any strange noises and has an MOT then I’d say it would be as good as anything else for the work you have in mind. Drivelines are fairly bulletproof but you’ll get the usual issues at that age, perished rubber components, linkages etc. They are prone to electronic faults, sensors giving false warnings, leaking engine side plates, but my Magnum, which is now eight years old seems to do the job well enough.

How many times would the OP be climbing in/out of it in a day as a shunter Harry??

An aul cheap 04 Premium with the Opti box would be my choice.

I would have thought a basic day cabbed 4x2 8 speed manual like an Axor, Daf CF etc. would be the more ideal and cost effective really.

2004 is a Mack engine - Too early for Volvo driveline on either Magnum or Premium.

D’oh, of course. Out of interest, were the Mack engines any good?

I had 3 with Mack engines, never had any problems with them, but Magnum wouldn’t be my option for shunting with, but then again, climbing up and down the cab would keep you fit.

Thanks allot for all the replies lads, I went and had a look this morning and all seems to be in order, average condition for a truck of that age. On start up it started to cycle through a series of warnings 4 or 5 in total ranging from injectors inop, to a theft key symbol warning, is this normal ■■

No

If only for shunting and no nights out I’d find out where CFs from Morrisons go to? Well serviced motor from a known source. Or similar big name company day cab units?

They do have one advantage for shunting, the ability to get from the cab to the catwalk without touching the ground, rather useful if you are parked in a mahoosive puddle.

I think it’s fair to say though that Renaults are prone to false dashboard warnings. I’ve had the “auto gearbox reduced function” warning come up every day for the last four years without the gearbox ever behaving differently, I have the “brakes, workshop stop” warning on permanently and my local dealer just cannot work out why, but assure me that the brakes are functioning perfectly (and it passed the MOT with this warning flagging). I don’t think this issue is exclusive to Renaults though, and if I did buy another truck then a Renault would be very high on the list, I really can’t fault mine.

E tech Magnums don’t normally throw up loads of false warnings like Dxi ones Harry - They are much less complicated.

So as far as the warning cycle of lights are concerned, are any Mot fails ?
