M62 + J25 eastbound entry ramp = long steep hill, so

What do Highways do?

Go and put a set of traffic lights half way up the slip road. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

It’s hard enough as it is in a car to get up to a decent speed by the time you need to merge. It’s going to be absolute chaos on there once those lights are working; cars will be merging into lane 1 from lane 2 of the slip ramp at 30mph, you watch. They don’t use lane 1 of the slip ramp because they don’t want to get stuck behind a slow lorry on the half mile bit of road before it merges near the services. Whoever came up with that idea should be sacked. :unamused:

It makes sense. It’d certainly help reduce the gridlock that is the M62 Eastbound at that area due to the amount of people trying to force their way on and it’ll stop the situation being exacerbated by the queue jumpers who come off at 25 and try to rejoin.

It won’t work. It’ll cause more gridlock, especially at the island itself. I live off that junction and it often queues nearly down the slip ramp to the island as it is. Now as they’re putting the lights half way up the hill all that will happen is that that traffic for the motorway will now end up queueing round the island, thus causing gridlock for those trying to get into Huddersfield, Mirfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Wakefield etc via Cooper Bridge from Ainley and Brighouse.

As for the slip ramp itself, the lights won’t change anything and the reason for that is because the slip ramp is too long for it to help. What will happen is when the lights change all the cars will go zooming off at full tilt and then slam on when they get to the back of the queue of traffic already at the top that’s trying to barge their way in. The traffic on the motorway doesn’t move fast enough for it to work and that isn’t because of those barging their way on from 25, it’s because of the queue from everyone trying to get off at 26. :bulb:

it works cos it restricts the traffic on to the motorway in fits and starts so it keeps flowing

some of the M6 junctions thru the midlands use it already and while it does sometimes seem a pain, it keeps the flow going on the whole

Well it was gridlocked this morning, nothing to do with traffic lights though. Unless that lorry hit them before it turned over.

The standard of driving and use of common sense is a lot different over there than it is here Pete. I’ve been through some of those traffic light controlled slip ramps over here and they made no difference whatsoever. All the cars zoom off like [zb] and just join the back of the last lot that went through, still queueing to barge their way on.
