M4 Eastbound shut from 15.30 today

Junction 4 shut.I went past but i am not sure why it is shut til late tonight according to Radio Berkshire.
A few cars sat in lane 3,a few on the hard shoulder.
Those seemed undamaged to me.
In lane 2 a written off car and a blue Scania with a flat bed trailer.Damage to the front of the truck.
After i passed on the Westbound, they shut both directions to land the air ambo.
The written off car had two elderly sat in the front and seemed to be talking to the paramedics.
The point is HATO could have pushed or towed the cars out the motorway lanes.
The truck seemed driveable too.But all three lanes shut behind the accident.

I never see road closures in Europe. They push the stranded vehicles out of the way,Police blow their whistles to move on the rubber neckers.
In case someone may die later in hospital,in the UK,the road gets shut as later it may become a crime scene.
With modern technology,on some accidents, they shut the road for seven hours or more.
What do they do that takes that long.?
There are lasers to measure the scene.
Road repairs may take a while if the tarmac has melted with a fire.
