M20 Bridge Collapse

I think the initial strike by the digger caused a stress fracture in the bridge span (if you look at the aerial photos the span has broken directly above the low loader),

That digger arm would be like a massive battering ram fracturing the concrete easily, this causing it to sag only the metal rebar inside the concrete barely holding it up, it then got struck by the artic which has ripped it off its mounting and dragged it forwards. So it was a double whammy that took it down.

Unless that’s a massive camera angle illusion there’s no way that digger arm was high enough to contact the bridge and there’s no way that the bridge could have collapsed ahead of the dumper loaded in front of the digger.

I’ve got to totally agree there, digger arm doesn’t look damaged either .

Maybe the bridge just fell, it was being worked on

The digger arm clearly struck it.

The bridge is pre-formed sections, the digger arm looks to me like it pushed it forwards and off of its supports which then dropped it down onto the dumper truck which forced it backwards under the weight of the bridge section.

I don’t believe the dumper was on the neck personally.

I think Reef is on the money. And when the bridge section hit the dumper it forced the arm backwards which would explain why the bucket is not lying flat on the trailer bed, which would make the height of the arm a bit lower also.

Although clearly not low enough for the hard shoulder height of the pedestrian bridge in this instance!

That’s taken from a drone a few meters above the bridge deck, so a higher position than you would get by standing there.

The bridge deck has probably been carried forward by the other lorry as it came down on top of it, which would have been travelling much faster than the lorry carrying the plant. The dumper has probably just been moved by the bridge landing on top of it, it doesn’t look like it had been loaded any further forward.

Another angle from Eddie Mitchell’s drone pictures.
Shows it is a low trailer and does look like the dumper has been moved back from the neck of the trailer if that’s where it was.

Can’t see any straps or chains still on the digger or dumper, looks to be a chain on the road by the back of the fridge trailer.

Similar load on their Facebook page from May.

HDL:
Maybe the dumper hit it and got pushed back into the digger.

This damage would seem to support my own theory that the bridge was pivoted forward at the impact point, snapping off on the hard shoulder side, and then crumbling away at reach.

It looks in the picture here that the bridge has somehow come back to side-swipe back into the trailer of this Artic trailer that I’ve already described as the Hero of the piece in the other thread.

For anyone still in doubt about the boom hitting the bridge…

(Gotta say those drone images are pretty good quality, I zoomed this image to x500)

…Concrete dust all over the boom… Pretty compelling evidence that!

my main though is that i wonder if the drone owner went out dressed in baby oil soaked lycra on his pushbike before playing with his toy… this has to be even more woosy than trainspotting or dashcam reporting…surely a new low in billy no mates lifestyle…there had to be someones misses sunbathing in a nearby garden for the flap shots…

to be fair…look for." drone fishing for tuna " on youtube. and be jealous of the dudes lifestyle.it just seems a bit of a ■■■■■ pastime over here to me.

That bridge collapsed on its own.
Look at the damage to the fridge lorry, looks like the bridge dropped a few foot first then dropped completely. Low loader driver must have seen it happening and slowed down and moved onto the hard shoulder, if he hit that boom on the bridge there would be a hell of alot more damage on the digger.

That’s rich coming from a truck driver that spends his free time on an internet forum

billy no mates, meets billy no mates in a billy no mates forum…hello kindred spirit…

The guy who took the photos is a photojournalist, so taking photos of news events is his job.

In any case, it’s a pretty spectacular incident, if it was near me I’d be out photographing it too.

“A trucker spending free time on an internet forum” is the only legal way they can do it - if you think about it.

“Free to dispose of their time as they see fit, perhaps reading a newspaper… or chatting on an internet forum”…

I believe that’s the definition of a “Driver’s legal Break”.

I’d hate to think some of us are diddling their phones whilst at the wheel, or even walking through the yard come to that! :open_mouth:

.

The drone owner is a professional photographer whose work features in many national and local newspapers and the drone is far from a toy drone. Fully CAA licensed to operate a drone and cost well into 4 figures.

if that’s the case then just another example of how the media will do anything to invade someones greif riddled privacy.i suppose it would have been more juicy if someone got slaughtered might even have seen the driver skewered in the cab by the steering wheel if it was 2 secs earlier…i just consider them pondslime,id have more respect for the trainspotter brigade than the media.

no comment…the prosecution rests .

I thought the headline on the BBC said “Dogger causes bridge to collapse on to M20” I rushed over here to discover it was much less interesting than I thought.

Yet you are on here discussing the topic and looking at the photos he took.
