How do you break down in lane 2 of a motorway? Surely if you feel it giving up you coast to the shoulder , tragic for those involved but i do wonder what people are thinking at times

Could have been absolutely anything.
Many years ago something ‘snapped on my car’ and car refused to go anywhere. This was in the middle of traffic lights as I was turning right in the rush hour. Can’t remember what fault it was now but a garage chappy just over the road came over and towed it back to his garage. Then in my MG 3 years ago, something else went ‘snap’ and I was unable to turn the steering wheel. That was actually to do with the steering column(?). Some guy came out and said ‘you need to get your car straightened up at the side of the road’ - it was sticking out a bit. I told him I could not steer it. He said ‘it’s a 60 mile an hour road and people go faster on this part of the road so you need to get it as close as you can’. I said ’ I CAN’t STEER IT!’
Oh, he said. Well you need to get out of the car while AA man turns up.

That’s assuming some kind soul will let you get to the hard shoulder.
This is a point I made yesterday on the “Caravan strikes again” thread.

Gearbox or diff failure and you’re stopping instantly. Engine seizes and you drive an auto or don’t have the forethought to press the clutch straight away and you’re stopping almost instantly. Vehicles won’t let you into L1 which is very likely to happen on the M1 roadworks sections, you’re stranded in L2.
Absolutely plenty of reasons to end up stranded in L2 which is why you should only be there for overtaking.

It was 10.30PM on the M18 , newspaper reports traffic was light , assuming you are doing 70ish i still fail to see how you could come to a complete stop in lane 2 if you had any sort of road sense about you
One of the Formula 1 cars didn’t get very far the other week when the engine blew and the back wheels locked up… and he was doing the best part of 200 mph!
