Just found this thread & wondered why I hadn’t seen it before - not too good with Computers!!!
I had a UK spec RC2 for a while & sold it when I had no space or time as I was building a new house - Have regretted selling the old girl ever since.
Had had very little use, only 175,000 from new & in pretty good condition, probably the only White left with the original Eaton back axle - I am told they used to knock them out ofter 2-3 years & most were replaced with Volvo axles
harry:
Can’t recall a Chris from notts, Archie but that colour truck could be Dreier of Suhr or Shiebler of Unterenfelden. The Dreier UK drivers were Mack & Rudi, who was a German. Shiebler drivers were from Manchester .
Hullo Harry,
Thanks for the reply mate. Kev, my Son said it was definitely Shiebiers that Chris was on for, but we can’t agree where he came from. He was a really Happy bloke, very fair hair.
Cheers, Archie.
Just remembered, Chris ,I think was on for Schieblers & was from Manchester. They got him a Magnum in Hangartner colours. When Sheibler packed up Hangartner bought the truck & gave Chris a job. The one I’m talking about wore glasses & was always cheerful, wiry little bloke.

Nice Rig Toddy! what engine! mine had Cat 3406 325hp - fan-bloody-tastic talking of the diffs my Eaton did 1.1 million k’s… never had an oil change and then carked it…had it re-built in Wolverhampton to same speck and off she went, sold it (correction gave her away) with Eaton all good!
i have tried to up-size a couple of pics of my old girl…hope it worked
Mine had the CAT 3406 too, with a Fuller Road ranger box.
I reckon that engine with the 5inch Chimney behind the cab has to be one of the best sounding engines ever. I sold her to a Scottish operator/enthusiast. I advertised the truck & he phoned me up, said he had been looking for one for a while, and did the deal blind (he saw some photo’s) - he sent me cheque and said, when it clears, let me know & I’ll get her collected.
A couple of weeks later, a blinged up T cab Scanny turns up & takes the old girl away.
Couple of days later - he is on the phone - Chuffed to bits, said she is so much better than he expected,
He took for a run, then stuck her in the shed and gave her a scrub

I know its a Freightliner, but White were merged with them in the States so its the closest thread on here. Pictured in BP garage at Milton/Didcot Oxon A34 a couple of months ago! Couldn’t get round the front for a better angle.
Hi adr,
I don’t think Freightliner merged with White in the States, it was Volvo that took them over. The first Whites produced in the USA after the Volvo takeover had the Volvo “diagonal stripe” on the radiator grille. I don’t know if this has been covered anywhere else on this forum, but I’m sure this is the case

Oh yes it did!!
White did take over Freightliner, as they did Diamond Reo & plenty of others,
They were the American British Leyland on their day, took everybody else over & then found themselves in the Sh*t
They had a Merger with GMC & were marketed as White GMC for a brief spell, Then Volvo took over what was left & for a while they were Volvo White, with the same model but with a different Grill & the diagonal stripe, then subsequent models were all Volvo
The Frieghtliners that had been made by White under license were part of a management buyout & reverted back to Freightliner.
Western Star were also part of the group that went their own way, I have some pics somewhere of Western Star cabovers that were basically RoadCommander 2’s with a different rad grill - vert smart they were too

Hi Toddy2, its not a great view of the front grill but you can see it’s different, is this the 1 you meant?
Regards Chris

Yes Chris - that is the early Western Star, basically a RC2 with some nicer bits on,
The next grill was same as that but with a big chrome W at the top,
The Western Stars at the time, were a bit like the Vanden Plas version of an Austin 1100

Does anybody remember Gerry Hill? with the blackand gold White.YBK 383V . if so we have his old truck, we also have some pics of his funeral which we attended with his truck in Burnley bout 3 years ago, taking him on his final journey on the back of his truck. Can somebody tell us how to upload pics onto this thread please? Thanks Phil Nash (VG Nash &son) Braintree Ex.
Hello Sam,
I knew Gerry back in the early 80’s and I have a picture of gerry’s unit before she got the 3rd axle fitted. I once rung you up and said I would come and have a look at his motor at truckfest but due to work I never got there, bet YBK 383V is chomping at the bit for a tilt and to get back over the water…and she’s more than capable aren’t ya girl, what did it say in your windscreen ( God is my co pilot ) those are gerrys words, rest in peace gerry I won’t forget ya.
Hi samnash 16,
Thought this might be of interest to you, when I saw the ref. to a black/gold RC2, it rang a bell so I dived into my photo box and found this. I took it sometime in the mid-late 80s in South Mimms Services M25. Never new or met Gerrard Hill, but from your description he sounds like a stand up bloke, and anyone who owns/operates a wagon like this has gota have something special about him.
YBK 383V before she got converted to a 3 axle motor
Nice thread!!! Wit a lot of pleasure I input the 12/1978 Trucktest for the LHD White RC2. Also
in Holland the importer (Geveke in Amsterdam) marketed the vehicle standard with the Cat 3406DIT,
whereas in Belgium the importer (CDB of Brussels) marketed the vehicle standard with ■■■■■■■ 290.
Also the back-cover of a brochure concerning the UK (White Truck Concessionaires Ltd.) importers
from Coleshill, apparently later moved to Bromborough.
