Losing C1 entitlement at 70

This Birmingham paper is the local equivalent of the daily express but it appears to say you will lose C1 entitlement at 70 and need to take a retest if you want to keep it. It doesn’t mention if you’re a C or CE holder and same applies? Not really aiming to drive at 70 anyway myself but who knows the way this government hates the elderly I may freeze to death before then :joy:

A medical test, will be needed for the over 3.5T licence.
Self declaration every 3 years that “yes all my bits still work, more or less OK” for car part.

So “another test” means medical not driving? So no different to what we have to do with hgv entitlement then. Think that’s probably a sensible thing to do. I personally think it should apply to cars too as many over 70s are really bad drivers as are other demographics

I only skimmed through the article but it’s referring to people who have a cat C1 licence through grandfather rights not people who have passed a cat C1 or higher HGV test.

People who passed a car driving test before 1st January 1997 (could be the wrong year) have a cat C licence by grandfather rights but lose it at the age of 70, this is nothing new it’s always been that way.

If you’ve got a cat C or C+E licence you will still be able to drive vehicles up-to the category your licence is valid for.

For C and C+E on five year licence, the only change occurs at 65 I believe, when the medicals are required annually.

I think doctors have to notify the DVLA of anything they know about that would disqualify. Whether they do or not is another matter.

It does apply to cars. I was stopped by coppers in the middle of the night in Cornwall and one said, after reading my French licence and checking on his radio, ‘you don’t have a licence mate’. They only let me go with a warning because they couldn’t get Swansea on the phone at 3am

When I got home to France I emailed Swansea and they said when you didn’t take a medical and renew after 70 we thought you had given up driving and your licence lapsed.

Turned out the fault was with the local authorities here. When I swapped my UK licence for a French one way back in 1999 they should have sent my UK one back to Swansea. They did a similar thing with my wife but for her they didn’t even take her UK licence off her and, as a result, she had 2 licences for the rest of her life.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone did say that.

It’s not a retest it’s just the requirement for D4 medical.

In France a medical is required every two years after 60, and every year if driving a bus.
At least it only cost 36 euros

If anything like hgv medical all pointless.
.
Esp if you go to likes of enterprise or other so called private doctors who don’t do much just class you as fit n healthy sign here thank you Very much

Ironically I only recently found out that a grand father rights D4 exemption actually applied to C1 entitlement.I thought it was same as C no it’s no buts in terms of D4 requirement.

As said before
