Lose your licence at 70?

I read in the papers that someone who has lost a child in an accident caused by an older driver is trying to get the law changed so that no one over 70 can hold a licence.

Seems a bit ‘over the top’. I’m sure the fact that my insurance premiums are about one tenth of those of a twenty year old reflects the likelihood of an accident?

I’m quite happy to take another test if that’s felt necessary, and if I fail, I lose my licence, but just an arbitrary cut off point seems ridiculous.

John.

It won’t happen nor should it happen, personally I’d be in favour of regular driving assessments for all age groups but I doubt that will happen either.

I can understand the emotions running high when a child is killed by an older driver, but the fact is that children are killed on the roads by drivers of all ages, it’s very sad but that’s the reality I’m afraid.

Hello John,

Yes of course its stupid…but just watch the media catch onto this and run with it…

Some people drive as easily as they walk…others never will…its that simple…and testing…what a joke, what does it prove? That the Monkey who is tested simply performs the allocated tasks to the required standard on that day …and that is that!

Gears to go, brakes to slow…what a silly mantra…where does anticipation, common sense, and responsibility for ones own actions come in? Anyone who has driven for a good few years will realise that the Uk standard of driving has fallen and fallen to the standard of the supposed third world.

Standards have not been helped by the continued chronic under investment in infrastructure, both national and local, the chronic lack of maintenance of the road network…(but how can a local Authority balance the demands on their budget from elderly care, and the increasing demand of housing, “benefit”), so its natural that the infrastructure in their care decays…and how…

Moronic Media output, such as programmes like Top Gear simply do not help in the cause of responsible driving…simply encourage selfish egotistical arrogance on the road…and the lack of a co-ordinated media profile by both the Road Transport Trade organisations, and unbelievably by the Trade Unions simply leaves our industry marginalised…

My own Daughters life and career was destroyed by a stupid arrogant and unfeeling youngster whose driving was almost suicidal…simply because he was late to clock in at a factory…yet there were a whole army of our respected legal profession who stood up to defend the indefensible…(without any semblance of success, I’m glad to say).

The thing that baffles me is why manouevering, and in particular going backwards is not hammered home… much of my driving for the last decade has been on rural roads with all sorts of vehicles…and to see the abject panic on a drivers face when they are confronted with the finality of having to reverse…it truly amazes me…(as does the antics, and the veering from left to right)…and yes Ive pulled them out of the ditches afterwards…

Surely, if people could handle their vehicle, well, they must have more pride in their driving?..but at present its all “point and squirt”…morons!

Cheerio for now.

Absolutely right! +1

Robert

Ongoing driving assessments - not tests - should be mandatory for all drivers with those assessments closer together for under 25s and over 65s

FREE nurse led NHS health checks should be mandatory for the retired with any concerns being transferred to the GP

FREE eye checks are available for the over 60s so those should be mandatory

All the above needs to be tick boxed on one form and sent to DVLA to allow licence continuation
