One thing i remember with the Atkinson fitted with the fuller range-change the new flat round chrome top lever with the
button on the side apart from the rattle was the 10-speed had a red button to change the range
and the 9-speed had a blue button to change the range, now was this just an Atkinson instalation thing or just chance
as they all came new at the time, so direcet from walton-le dale via dealers.
This is a crucial question to this thread. I’ve always thought that the big chrome ‘bicycle bell’ knob was for 13-speed Fullers only, mainly because I have only seen F13s with them. Did, then the 10-speed, and even possibly the 9-speed ever have this gear-knob fitted? Or were they only added as a replacement for broken ones. Robert
It’s the same with a 13 or 18 speed Fuller, the 13 has a red switch for the splitter, on the 18s it is grey.

The 9 speed fuller at least was provided with many different types of gear shift operation. The Bedford TM and Fodens with the 9 speed usually used this type from memory. However I can’t remember the exact set up on the 13 speed TM but from memory I don’t think it was a ‘big chrome bicycle bell’ type I think it was more along the lines of the MAN set up.

While at least the DAF 2800 ATI and Magiruz Deutz conventional 9 speed set ups had the range change control built into the gearshift itself with no range change button.
I had four trucks fitted with the nine speed and four different gear levers. Sed Ak 400 had the metal ‘up and down’ switch on the lever side, my Foden eight legger had the black plastic knob with the white plastic slide that was painful on the thumb until it bedded in! First six wheeler Foden had the rotary side to side switch, the other six wheeled Foden had the large black plastic one very similar to the 13 speed.
Pete.
So this Atkinson must have had a 10speed Fuller then (red switch). Robert
Like Windrush, I have driven several different wagons with 9 speed 'box, with a variety of lever knobs used.
I wonder if the fitment was dependent on the type of 'box fitted, or which manufacturer was fitting it, or whatever came to hand;-)
My god have I rebuilt a few of them range changes for them and full box rebuilt, not forget the twin split box with the snap ring failing and getting into 4 gears at the same time and rip the box in 2.
I have known a few people that when building up Fuller to time the box up well wrong and then it trys to climb out of the chassis when they drove it Lol.
Good old box with a Lipe roll away clutch and not the daft Dana clutch that was a right pain to adjust.
Cheers Welly
You can just make out the model number RTX 7609 on the plate in my ERF C series thats got the 230hp 6LXCT Gardner engine it

We had three 10-speeders in Atki artics, all with the flat-top, “dinner plate” chrome knob and red switch.
These two had 9 speed FBS, The Roadtrain RR,Eagle Deisel, & Les,s had a big ■■■■■■■ in it, Regards Larry. (PS This photo was taken at Invergordon)

Big ■■■■■■■ and Fuller 9: nice. By ‘big’ do you mean that it had the big cams or was it a 350+? Robert
I own this and want to fit this 13 speed into her!

Jesus! If you can do it, do it! There have been quite a few Fuller 13s and Eaton Twin-splitters bunged in 2-series Scanias over the years, but I have not yet heard of a 3-series receiving this honour. An Astran Scania with a Roadranger 'box appeals most strongly to me!! Keep us informed on the Lorries with 13-speed Fuller Roadrangers thread. Robert
PS Is that Graham Ball’s old motor? If it is, I ran down to Saudi with it when Trevor Dodwell was its pilot. Robert

Those three Atkis must have been “L” reg and onwards “ROF”,I must say I much preferred the older “plunger” type of Range Change switch,I know the one you describe was supposedly better to look at ? I don’t seem to recall that ERF used the flat chrome switch one but I could be wrong Cheers Bewick.

I agree with you Bewick - there was something much more positive about that plunger! Robert
Preferred the plunger type like the Sed Ak 400 had myself, more reliable. The black plastic gear lever knob with the white slider fitted to certain Fodens and other makes tended to get fluff inside it from your clothes and needed cleaning out occasionally, plus it also wore after several years letting the 'box slip out of range at inappropriate times! When new of course the slider was so stiff that it put grooves in your thumb.
Pete.
Yes robert graham balls old lorry.trev and graham are now in bahrain.
To be honest im plucking up the courage to start the conversion! Box has had new bearings, need a gear knob, and the clutch bits, and some courage ! Should happen this winter, git to do something soon. Os the scania clutch isnt right, and its been in there at least 6 yrs now, if i need to buy a clutch i
May as well convert her !
Well good luck to you. It sounds like a worthy project to me! Robert
