Long distance trucking from Wales to the USA

I’ve just been reading this months copy of Railway Illustrated and i see that one of Allelys heavy haulage from Studley took a class 70 loco which had been dropped as it was lifted out of the hold of a ship at Newport docks, from Newport all the way back to Norfolk Virginia.
It went via the “Atlantic Concert”,an ACL ship from Liverpool and was driven on to the ship and then driven back off at Norfolk, where the loco was lifted off and the Allelys vehicle drove back on and came back across the pond to Liverpool.
The photos clearly show it disembarking in America, what an extraordinary job that must have been,Lucky driver i’d say!

bloody hell, is that a 1st■■?
bit longer than the dover to calais boat then :grimacing:

got any links?

the new metal shower gel is good IMHO

Would the driver have travelled with the ship? More likely that he flew out and met it, had a day in the US and then went back on a plane again.

Either way, a bit different to the norm, even in specialised work like Allelys

I have seen pictures where Wynns heavy haulage [also from Newport] sent Diamond T’s loaded over to North America many years ago.

A very unusual job though.

I think I remember a lot of years ago, Richard Nobles’ land speed record at the
salt flats in Utah. Entourage arrived in a Brit registered T45…anyone else remember that?

i’m sure this has been mentioned on here before , im knackered though so i could be talking complete ■■■■… :open_mouth:

infact thinking about it i’m certain is was mentioned , because there was talk of american trailers on the road over here . i’m sure someone will remember .

This is the one

The engine was on the quay for quite awhile but covered with a tarpaulin for a time, it was lifted out of the ship with the wrong size spreader. The Atlantic Concert is a ro-ro as well as a conventional box boat.

“Unloading of the locos did not start until 14.30 and unusually continued into the hours of darkness. No. 12 broke through the deck and landed on top of food products. The only good thing is that it was the last loco to be lifted out and not the first, as otherwise it would have fallen onto the others and smashed them up too. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Flying Banana’”.

The other Time they flow a Loko with an Antonov from America over.
Its a 6 Engine Jet.Just one build.

Thanks for those links in your post Santa. Link no 4 has the full sp on the reason for 70012 being sent back to the States. But the one which will keep me --(a steam engine fireman between 1951 and 1963, with a 5 year Squaddie break in the middle)- occupied till Domesday  is the Railway Herald link (no1). That has got links in it to hundreds of pics of steam engines. Steam buffs take note.

Wished i could get my scanner to work to show the pic of the Alleys DAF coming off the ship in Norfolk Virginia.
Bloody computers!!!

I would hazard a guess that the fact the railway network is so huge in the US there is no real reason to haul a loco by road therefore a suitable trailer is either non existant or unavailable, seems logical to do it all in one trip

i remember reading in a truck mag about a Renault Magnum going to America, i think it was something to do with a racing team maybe?

I remember it vaguely too Carl, a Red Magnum?, but I think it was one the infamous april 1st editions

Like Autocars “lap of the M25 in under an hour” using a Toyota prototype car
That one caused a lot of grief

Not the one from the mag but BigLorryBlog came up trumps…
