Another Meachers pic from Bubbleman’s Scrapbook thread I expect Charlie or TIR Original will have something to say about the roping/sheeting.
Hi Pat. Another load of Pirelli General which could have been from Eastleigh or Southampton, looking at the drums I would have plumbed for So’ton. The drums on the front are open storage and do not require sheeting so that would be an unnecessary excerise as amply secured. The goods on the rear are obviously to be kept dry and may have been added at a diferent time or place. the sheet is well secured at the front well enough not to flap. Every hook is roped and dollied from front to back and in my estimation very safe and secure. I would have been okay with pulling that trailer any distance and wouldn’t mind people thinking that I had loaded it. The trailer in fact was not in my opinion loaded by a newbie. I would love to hear anyone elses remarks.
P.S.) I agree that rain could possibly seep in from the front and run along the floor but we don’t know what is under the sheet and I am sure the driver would have thought of that. (may have been palletised).

Hi Mappo how did the maiden voyage go in the new one then Tony !!!Hope you “clunk clipped on that trip” R Jimski
Hya Jimski, yeh new MAN went well mate…nice motor.
Re the clunk click bit i,ll let you all know that on Thursday while travelling southbound through Salisbury just after the College roundabout at 0510 hrs
i got a pull and got done 60 quid for not wearing a seat belt. So be warned !!!
That,s the 2nd time in 2 years, the 1st time being at 0530 hrs at the bottom of the M271.Perhaps it,s time to start wearing it aye.
Tir Original…Hi Nobby i fully agree with you regarding the roping and sheeting although that would have been a sackable offence on Smith of Maddiston.
A fly sheet over would have sufficed. Hope you,re keeping ok.
Hi TIR Original when i passed my HGV with Curley who used to be outside Meachers yard in a little office i walked into Meachers yard and started the next day i then spent a week in the yard roping and sheeting then was given the c**p jobs like trailer changes at the waste paper depo down on the millbrook road and you soon became pretty good at it. Nothing better then a good tidy roped and sheeted load !! R Jimski
Hello Pat yes my dad is Ray he is still about driving for DHL at the minute i think he would be lost if he was not driving . Karl is my uncle he was at sea route for a few years as well . I also worked there from 96 till it closed in 02 . My dad misses sea route even though he wont tell me that i mean he worked there for 30 years . I do miss the old 111s though
I was on for Sea Route Ferry Southampton first with a rigid Bedford TK then an AEC before I had Scania’s I was in Heywood regularly twice a week and have had a few pints in the Pig and Whistle and used to park up on waste ground by the Talbot Pub.
Here is a pic of a couple of Searoute 111’s
Not sure if your dad ever drove this Scania 110 DMW488L I know that Steve Royds drove DMW490L, Frank Brandon rolled a 110 at Chilworth roundabout on the edge of Southampton, and I remember Leo drove the four wheeler Sedon Atkinson,Big Eric a fitter, John Howarth and Bob Hamilton in the office and Ken Platt in the warehouse driver Barry. Some of the early subbies Harold Lamb, Brian Oliver, Jack Kroll, Maurice Platt?? the mad Dempsey Bros happy memories
Oh wow !! ACG 724V my dad drove that from new until the engine gave up the other one was drove by a guy they called billy one drop . Steve Royds had his own motors for a while he had three Scania 142s and pulled for sea route .
Bob is on his own now still forwarding he is based in Middleton somewhere . The pig and whistle is still there the last time i went past . I remember going in there as a kid on a saturday afternoon thinking i was a trucker and just generally annoying everybody .
I knew about Frank rolling one i think he rolled another as well i might be wrong though . Before my dad had ACG he had an old N reg i think , i will ask him tomorrow . i can just about remember it having the handbrake on top of the dash and a massive white steering wheel .

Hi Lee
I think that 110 was a GHO54N?? registration Searoute had two GHO’s 53/54 and the late Jim Copley drove the other one from the Southampton depot.
I will ask him about the old N reg but i might be wrong it might have been an L reg , i have a picture of it somewhere parked at the bottom of Mont Blanc . I still see Ken Platt he was my manager for a football team i played for hes as mad as a badger now still likes a drink or three .
I can just about remember the old Sea Route depot in Southampton i remember the drive out of southampton there would be about thre of them all racing out of southampton at like three in the morning . I spent all my school holidays in ACG 724V this is bringing back alot of good memories for me makes me realise how i got into trucking . The drivers i work with now have no idea what a 111 is or a 141 .
Kalfon used to scare the crap out of me i dont think he was keen on the drivers having there kids with them it was weird when i went to work for him but what a great job my dad was in the office then at heywood
What road was the old depot on was it Empress road ?
Yes the old Sea Route Ferry depot was in Empres Rd, Bevois Valley Cashmore or simply Cash was the traffic manager then with Les Emery transport manager and of course the boss Andre Kalfon, Geoff Hobbs ran the warehouse and Tony Eldridge ran the Workshop.
They then of course moved up to Chickenhall lane Eastleigh opposite H J Youngs
Oh boy i remember Tony Eldridge and his lad worked in the garage . Ive had a few nights parked in Eastleigh round the back . used to go to the chippy and then over the bridge to the pub but that was more recent . My dad used to leave me on my own when i was a kid guess you could get away with it back then .
Not sure if Bob Burton was at sea route when you was i know he worked there along time , he retired about the time i started . I remember a guy called Shaun but cant remember his surname , he worked in the office at southampton
Yes Bob was at Sea Route when I subbed for them he drove a Seddon Atkinson 200 four wheeler I seem to remember I think when SRF packed up he went on for STS Transport not sure about that though I expect someone will correct me if I am wrong. There was also a Jock Abernaffy drove a Scania 80 four wheel flatbed artic drivers were Frank Evans, Denny Hume, Jim Copley, John Hill, Barry Staford, Kevin Connelly, and later on Mick Hennesy and Sean Moran.
Not sure you will remember where this was taken! By the fuel pumps around the back of the Empress Rd yard
And this one was parked opposite facing the workshop

I remember Frank Evans not too sure about the others . Were the pumps facing you as you went through the gates im not to sure its about 28 years ago when i was last there and i was only about 5 or 6 years old . Have you converted that into a sleeper Pat ?

Hi Lee
Yes I did convert that old ‘K’ Reg AEC Mercury into a sleeper cab pics were taken around 1977.
The pumps were at the back of the yard you could not see them from the road, but if you drove in from Empress Road and straight in past the offices the yard doglegged to the left that was where the two pumps were under a canopy.
