Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi newmercman

Another good one! An ex Dutch 380 EDC Scania 113 this was a great truck once we had ditched the EDC an put her back to normal 360 bhp. The EDC was so troublesome and at the time Scania didn’t know anthing about them had Feather Diesels look at it but only lasted about 3 months before it played up again!

Here pictured with an STS trailer driven by Paddy (Sandals) Keoghan.

Regards Pat

Found this one of the infamous John Shaw mending an old M reg RHD 140 somwhere in Europe next to ex Jerry Whelan’s RIP ex Astran LHD 140 KJN671P

Regards Pat

newmercman:
Just had another look at your last pic & the 113 with high roof you talk about is also ex NSE, small world

Hi newmercman found another pic of that ex NSE 113

Note the nice yard

Regards Pat

Here is the only way to run trucks these days!!!

Charity pull outside the Star and Garter Waterloo Road Southampton. My 143 G276ATP driven for me by Phil Dibden on traction to Europe for a few years. I sold it to Barry Barnes and I dare say it is still working in the Middle East!

Regards Pat

That’s a PROPER yard Pat, like the fuel economy device too, must’ve been hard work over the mountains though :exclamation:

My ex NSE globey had the original pattern stripes but in red & green, when I find the pics I’ll post them, went in the loft last week but it seems that someone in my household has a fetish for xmas trees, I gave up counting at 7, there is a box of photos somewhere in the plastic forest, but I’m going to need a guide, the foliage is too dense

A line up of my trucks in my yard around 1983

Regards Pat

Another blast from the past an ex Molo’s very early daycab 110 about 1971/2 model with a five speed box

Regards Pat

Good picture of the old Molo 110 Pat. That was about the time that they took over U.C.C. in Southampton, must have been’71 or '72. I remember an old mate of mine driving for them known as “Randy” (Ian Rands) but dont know what happened to him or if he is still about. Before that he was with E&M Transport from Lymington, depot in Southampton. Anyone remember them ?
One of the partners was Paul, chief pilot for BOAC back then. Quite often would turn up from Heathrow in full uniform and drive a Foden to Liverpool Market or somewhere. Could just imagine the look on thier faces when he emerged from the cab with all that scrambled egg on his shoulders and sleeves.

I went into Molo’s Yard early one evening to pick up a fridge trailer loaded with bananas to be in Chelmsford for 0700 the following day.Too late to go home so I set the alarm for 0400.Woke up and some stupid ■■■■■■■ had dropped a trailer right across the front.Nothing I could do so I went back to bed.Never did any more for Molo.

Bananas in a fridge trailer Charlie ? Blimey thats getting modern !
I only ever roped and sheeted them on an ordinary flat. Corner boards were in order of course.

Hows about sitting down the berth waiting for the Cape fruit. Maybe six boats all lined up in the Solent waiting to come in to berth.Everything handball.Loading trailers all day and then getting your load." Must be in Liverpool market by 0300 tomorrow".Great days back in the 60ts eh?

get down 106 for 8.AM . give the driver in front 1/2 crown to shunt my truck up the queue all day , get back down there late afternoon , day off , result !!! who hasnt done that ■■?

Yes young man. Done that a few times myself. Were they not great times or not.?

Charlie one , no they were not great times !!! great memories yes !!

Hi Guys
I should know you lot out there , this is amazing because I was looking up the old Royal docks in London on the net as I used to deliver there in the 60s and remembered The Silvertown Truck Stop ,Typed it in and hey ho found this great forum . I never thought Id hear again about all the old Hauliers that were around southampton as I have here . I started For Southampton Road Transport in 67 , Based at the back of Pitters yard in Moorgreen , SRT was owned by Pitters and Meachers who had bought out Habin Haulage , Habin had the same colours as Meachers that was green then , mainly Seddons , same as MMD, for their fruit contracts out of the docks and also Cornicks for thier timber , anybody remember the timber boats at the town Quay , all the Hauliers in Southampton were there running the wood up to Montague Meyers in the New Docks . Eventually as SRT moved into a new yard with a new livery near Lorrains , that wasnt there then , I moved onto BRS Hampton Park , Swaythling , I think a B&Q replaced it .
We did a lot of Rubber for ISR to Membury and Yatesbury on BRS around 70 to 73 and had an office at Fawly , That bloke on the weighbridge at Membury was a deranged misery and hated all drivers and would often run out of his office and bollock you if you didnt get your sheets off quick enough , I think he ended up in a loonie home , or a driver put him there , did ISR for Henry Smithers in the 70s as well , we were also based for BRS at at the Heinz depot , that later became Offers yard , as we were on contract to Pirrellis of Eastliegh on cable working also with Bakers who did the really heavy drums with thier home made trailers , they used to bottom out on the slightest bump . There were great Cafes around , the one in Radcliffe road brings back memories of great bacon butties , the White house Cafe became Calor offices and then in the old Millbrook road there was a small cafe too , can`t remember the name of that one . Who was the Haulier based between Hill lane and Four post , they had Lorries from the fifties . What about Brain Haulage , all Scanias , Afro haircuts and gold bracelets .
Regards from Divvy .

fantastic “frenchy” , "haulier between Hill Lane and Four Post " , not “Edmund Gerald” was it !!!

Well Frenchy where do we start ? First of all the transport company at Four Post Hill. I reckon the one you mean was Reeves of Manchester. They were green Fodens and did mainly night trunking. They also had two Scania 110’s with tii-axle tipping trailers that used to do a night run for salt back to ISR Fawley. Bill Parker & Andy Stratton were the drivers of those two. You were probably on SRT with Andy in 1967. You will also remember Brian Poole who had the Dodge still painted in Cornicks livery, Denny York the manager and his brother Cliff. Cliff would take you round to Tommy Whites for breakfast in his Ford Anglia which had a disabled sticker on the windscreen when he bought it, so would have to put on a limp when parked on double yellow lines. you also will remember Dave Enstone, Dave Waggot, Black Harry etc. Like you say doing timber from the old dock or American Airbase stuff out of 107 berth.
(Please tell me if I’m going too fast for you but I’ve got to get it down while it’s in my head). I’ve already put a posting on here about George at Membury and how he fell off the forklift when he bumped his chin on my fist, quite accidently of course. People seemed to think that he worked for ISR but that was not the case as he worked for the company that did the storage on the old airfield. Can you remember the name ? It was Hughes & Marriott of Newbury.
I’m sure there’s lots of other names and companies that you will find on here (starting at page one) that you will remember from those early years.

Sorry old trucker,Bur I must disagree With you on your last posting. To me the 60s were a good time.I’ve already posted my remark about the job etc. I don’t know if you were up the road at all.Probably yes. If you weren’t in the digs at five o’clock washed and changed eating your tea, there was something wrong.Am I right? None of that today.Maybe for the the better. But I’m not sure. Will TIR Original agree with me.I hope so.

Got to agree with you Charlie, the 60s and 70s hold the best times and memories for me.Ok,so the tackle is better nowadays but the hours seem just as long and more and more weekend/Bank Holiday working plus bloody cabphones and some bugger mithering you all the time.We just cracked on and got the job done which was the main thing.
When I read the other part of the forum and see what drivers have to put up with nowadays I can’t see that I’m missing owt so good luck to them who want to make driving a career but I reckon they missed out on the better days 30 and 40 years ago.
Just how I see it,that’s all.
