Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Cracking pictures Pat.Takes me back to some great days. Those flares look like an old pair of mine that went missing. As for the cheesecloth shirts.Great news.I’ve still got mine in the wardrobe.Happy days

I’m so glad you said the 143, I had a couple but the P reg that I had was the best by far, I only sold it last year, had it for almost 5yrs & in all that time apart from oil & filters & a re-line all it needed was a range change, a brake chamber, an injector pipe & the odd set of brushes for the alternator, none of which had it on the hard shoulder. I sold it for £3k less than I paid for it too which is always nice.

As for the 4 series, I had a Danish import 460 & that was a nice motor but not a patch on the 143s, it always needed a new air valve or electrical connection somewhere, it was thirsty too & I know it was being driven properly as I was the one behind the wheel & when you pay the bills your right book gets a lot lighter!

Sorry to be picky but was it your right book or your right foot.I eagerly await your reply Mark.

Sorry Charlie, that’ll be the foot in the boot, or as I like to say sometimes the ■■■■ in the book

Don’t know why I got a [zb] for F O O K, could it be it rhymes with ■■■■

Mr MJM:
We did have one from Palmer that we found out was on the Herald. It was an R112 6x2 - reg C222 KFR. Turned out to be a complete dog - was never right but he tucked us up. That was, I think, the last one we had off him. I’ll go through my pics and see what I can find.

All the best

Hi Mr MJM, that R112 wasn’t a light blue & white tag axle by any chance was it? that reg number rings a bell.

Ross.

Pat, do you know which Danzas depot your 141 was pictured outside of please?

Hi no sorry I dont know where it is but I will try to find out I would have thought some of the learned drivers on here could have answered that question though!!!

Regards Pat

Looks like Swiss to me . Basel ,probably…?

Wasn’t the Danzas depot at Lausanne alongside a railway line like the one in the picture?

Ross.

Harry

Thats Danza’s picture looks like where Leimgruber’s now are at the USG in Basel, A stones throw from the Football Stadium up by the train tracks.

Was in there on Thursday, and it does look very similar. On the end of the building there are even open loading docks like the ones in the picture above.

I could well be wrong though.

If you can, get a snap of your Merc in the same place, be interesting to see the comparison, bet the old 141 looks better though

Is that the same railway yard that UPS are in  Used to take a load down there every weds a few years back, I hear that you don’t go round the houses in Basle anymore, it’s all mway from the border, is that right

While we’re on the subject of Basle, if it was indeed Basle :exclamation: There was a resturaunt on the Swiss side that I went in that was owned by an ex M/E driver, another driver took me there a few times & i have vague memories of it, was it a popular place  I tried to avoid parking on the border as a rule, but I stopped a few times if I didn’t have time to get through to Chiasso to save on tax, always been a bit tight, must have Scottish blood

Leave that with me and i shall see what i can do for you.

As for the 141 looking better, there’s no contest!

I am pretty sure its the same place, Ony been ther ethe once since i have been back, but no doubt will be going there again. It is all Motorway from the Border now, We dont come to it from the Border though, we come from Muttenz direction,as its only the Leimgruber Export’s which are based there, Leimgruber Import’s are still at Kaiseraugst.

Thanks Lads I knew someone would enlighten us I will be seeing one of my old drivers on Thursday and will ask him if he knows for sure!

Regards Pat

Yes it was Ross - with a dashboard full of sand!!!

newmercman , That was Tonys’ ;big guy with a beard .Good old friend of mine. His place was right on the old St.Louis border. Good bloke. I remember he had a pony & trap as a hobby. he bought a small TK horse box & complained it was too slow. I explained that it had a low geared diff to get up the hills.A Hangartner driver got him a high diff from the UK which he fitted & lived happily ever after.

Harry,

Thanks mate, the image of the bloke I had in my head was similar to the wig salesman in the film Goodfellas, so big bloke with a beard fits the bill.

Can’t remember who I went in there with, it was late 80s & as it was then I just got yapping with another driver & we went to dinner (wish I had the same success with women!) Bloody good night though, the host knew the bloke I was with & joined us at the table for a good few beers.

Went in there a couple more times, but then I got a blue book & that was the end of my Swiss experiences until the UPS stuff in the mid 90s.

Hi mercman this was a cracking ex Dutch 143 with a real nice paint job.
Never missed a beat went all over Europe for me now in the middle east (as are most of my old trucks) still working hard!!

Thanks Pat,

That is a very nice looking lorry, just enough bling, although in my mind the only bling you ever need is a V8 badge, it makes ■■■■ irrelevant
