Anyone remember Munn & Underwood who were vehicle distributors and repairers.
One of there letters from 1949 to a company called Hatley’s at Chandlers Ford who looks like they were involved in the timber trade.

Pitter’s '‘Tin front’ Mammoth Major was supplied by Prince’s Commercials in March 1958. With the introduction of heavier artics (with larger payloads,) following 1964’s C& U
regulations, vehicles like Pitter’s AEC were replaced though they had plenty of life left in them. This particular AEC passed to Carless,Capel & Leonard Ltd,oil distillers & refiners at Hackney Wick, London E15.
Carless Capel & Leonard produced (amongst many distillates), motor spirit & in 1893 marketed it under the name ‘Petrol’ which became the generic name for motor spirit

That is very interesting, a fact I hadn’t heard of before, but would explain why in the USA it was called something quite different.

Agreed.
Just had a quick look at Wiki entry and read about the various UK/Eu/S. America/N.America/African terms and their origins

I might be wrong but I’m guessing that’s a subcontractor, I don’t recall Jameson having an F88, but as I said, I could be proved wrong

I think if I remember rightly Jameson had one of the first round fronted Scania into the UK approx 1964… I might be wrong but !
IIRC didn’t Charlie Jeggo (Charlie 1) drive the VOLVO for Jamesons?
There was a subbie with a 290 called James Pontin(g) IIRC came from Andover. I remember him coming in to Prince’s for some work to be done (290 mod) and he didn’t have an account and it was covered by Jamesons for non campaign costs.

Do you mean the first Scania Vabises? The first one I saw was loading alongside me at Kelloggs, Trafford Park which would be about 1970/71 after I came back from Oz. That was black and white but I don’t remember any name on it. Thought it was the bees’ knees with its great big white steering wheel. Very cool.

European Traction Services in Bedford who ran out of Southampton dock to LeHavre mostly, also ran a Scania Vabis (approx 2 years old) in approx 1968 / 9 alongside their New Scania 110. I think Fergie 47 will probably know also, he did drive the 110 a few times.

I don’t know them but I did call in once at another Bedford firm, one who specialised in international heavy haulage, can’t remember the name now though. Nothing doing so I carried on south and ended up later with a job at White Trux after my visit there.
I had a Scania 110 during my work for an old mate, Rod Closs of Nottingham. It had a day cab with a couchette, the back of the driver’s seat folded down to complete the bunk. Most of my time there I had a Guy big J, of which I was very fond and had curtains matching his colours made up even though it was also a day cab. I got it very well set up for sleeping though. He later leased it to a couple of blokes in Kent who were setting up and they paid me to leave the curtains in the motor.
