Hi All.

“Happy Birthday” Tony, hope you had a good day,I’ll give you a ring to catch up.

Jim,
The Matsolex photo is mine and it’s one of my units,I’ll find the original out and let you have it for the model,I can’t remember what it says, but we did Belgian-Holland groupage every week for them.

Pete,
I think the last word on the tilt is Wolverhampton :unamused: Hope you are keeping well.

Regards
Richard

Hi Jim, nice photo of Jack Fecitts old motor and trailer. I know it don’t appear so but that reads UK-FRANCE- ITALY-BELGIUM-HOLLAND. Underneath is the address 31-32 Canute Road, Southampton. With phone number 0703-■■? Telex ■■?
Jack was one of the best blokes you could wish to meet. Back in the 60’s he gave me a job when he was general manager for Charlie Jameson (Jameson International). Later in the 70’s when I ran some motors as JBM Ltd., I would quite often lend Jack one of my flat trailers, although getting it back sometimes proved to be a struggle Ha Ha. Sorry but I have no record of his phone or telex numbers but I am sure somebody will come up with them for you.
Regards, Nobby.

Nobby IIRC Jack Fecitt was a short little man and his wife was not tall either, I also did some work for him under the Solent Shipping & Transport banner, there permits were Trading as Monkhide. The picture is of me loading a SS&T flat at Manitou’s factory in Ancenis think it was, cant remember what I took out but they did a lot of stuff to Bordeax for oil rig building so could have delivered there.Manitou had aplace in Chandlers Ford before going to Ferndown or where ever they are now.
Jack and his Mrs had a pub in Redlynch cant recall the name, there were a cople of OD chaps who worked for Jack who lived there, one was John Compton he had a lime green Scania, the other was chap with long side boards and I think he had a Merc name of Whitlock, I knew his brother Roger as he was into motorbikes at the same time as me, going back a bit that. Jack also did Macpack’s out the same dock that Townsend Thoresons used and Phil Garrett was a very young office clerk with TTF and we still see him in our office now and again. he’s still in the ferry game, oh the memories good old days, Buzzer.

Hi all just to warn you all winkey is trying to get on here :smiling_imp:

Hi Ginger STS I notice this is your first post so welcome aboard, at least you get some memory jerkers on this thread. Very sad about Spadger but it comes to us all in the end.
Any ways how is life in France with you, by the way you still got that new forest pony you bought of the old man all those years ago. Put up a mug shot as we have not seen you since the time you attended the August bash at the Wheat Sheaf, cheers John Davies aka Buzzer.

Hi

You are correct but there is no prize for working that one out RTD.

Hello Ray Smyth again. My only picture of a Robert Baillie Atkinson,FPO 13C,on the A58 between Halifax and Rochdale,
returning to Wigan from Bradford, No M62,It was being built at the time. Note the unusual headboard,It had just been
rebuilt with a new cab, following young Mervyn rolling it over on the old A34 near Steventon (Oxon),fully laden with
3000 trays of Guernsey Tomatoes.

Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hi Ray, nice pic of the old Baillie Atki. Those high headboards were certainly not unusual in those days and were very handy to get a good start when loading fruit etc. In fact if loading trays of Jersey tomato’s they were a necessity. I can remember actually going 27 high with tomato’s behind spuds while on for Yardley’s but that was only a part load and they made it to Leeds Market. Baillie and MMD drivers said we were mad at the time and I guess they were right but if the guv’nor said it had to go on then it did in those days. Cheers Ray.
Regards, Nobby.

Hi Nobby,Thanks for your reply.Regarding the Robert Baillie Atkinson photo,it is not very good quality and very small.
Being not very savvy with laptops and attachments, I only realised that I could enlarge it by clicking on the image,
after I had posted it on here. Re the Jersey Tomatoes,we didnt carry them very often, and from memory, they were
all single trays when they were handballed. The Guernsey Toms were better packed,3 trays wired together, and a
wooden lid on the top,all handball at markets, except Glasgow and Liverpool. On pallets, the total would be approx.
2200 trays,Handballed on at Portsmouth, the total would be about 3300 trays. A full load of French cauliflowers
from Fergie47 Land looked like a block of flats sat on your trailer. You mentioned Leeds market,I remember one
character there named Barry,Head salesman,Jack the lad type, cant remember who he worked for,but I think they
were one of the main stallholders.

Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.
