Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

No offence intended Tone! You have worked bloody hard in your time. Do not let anyone say different. OK Regards Charlie

Here are a few pictures of Bakers MAN ROW 208M looking a little bit worse for wear!

Tone,

Was that the MAN you drove ? looks like he’s been running bent

Regards
Richard

Charlie there was me telling every one you were a devout religious man and you would never lie, and there you are sucking up to Mr Mapson, has he got something on you ?

Richard you make me laugh, always that sharp sense of humour, should think every man and his dog ran bent in there day some more than others. By the way did you ever offer incentives for that said activity, or did they just do it for you because you were a jolly good fellow ?
They wont come and get you now it’s too late for that but I am thinking of writing a book and would like to get my facts right, Buzzer.

PS. Some blokes did some amazing driving sessions for me, but Mappo was not one of those he always ran by the book HA HA !!!

Buzzer you have sussed me out. As you say I am a devout coward. Yes Mappo does have something on me which I may well divulge at the bash this year. As for running bent. Off course I did my share. But I can honestly say that when I worked for R and A I was never asked to do that.Naturally I did do so for my own benefit.Regards Charlie

Charlie there you go again sucking up to Tricky Dicky, I am going to have a word in your vicars ear so he can try and correct you so look out on Sunday !
Of course during my career at the helm I was squeaky clean and never in sighted a sole to do wrong, and always paid up when they got caught if it was on my behalf, that’s why I can walk into church and not be scorned upon, Buzzer.

Now then…all these sarky comments about running bent, I have of course heard of these
Illegal activities, but I can honestly say with hand on heart, that I absolutely and categorically
NEVER ran on an illegal tacho.!!!

I did however hand in or file through the open window   about a dozen discs a week… :unamused: :unamused:

Charlie, I know you are only jesting mate, and don’t worry you,re secret is safe with me… :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Oh and by the way, good photos of Bakers MAN,s…

Very amusing but typical tale from back in the day Nobby.
As you said earlier, we,ve all got memories from the past that we could
Bring back to life on here.
In the meantime, here’s a photo that should jog the memory of someone in
particular that’s not posted in ages, and he now resides in France, but I,m not
mentioning any names… Lol.

Hi again Tony, by you posting this picture reminded me of another little incident that happened in my presence again round about 1970 but I can’t remember if it involved this particular boat transport company. Should the driver be on here he will certainly remember. The day started with a trip over to Le Havre from Southampton arriving in the evening and after completing our paperwork a few of us left the port towards Paris. This was the direction as you will know that we would take to get to our various destinations be it France or Italy (And before the building of Tankarville Bridge).
We stopped as usual for our evening meal at La Fourche, Yvetot. The group included myself, a boat transport chap, about three or four PBC, one of which was Peter (jellylegs) Stansbridge R.I.P. and a couple of other hauliers. One of the PBC trucks was a Ford D1000, driven by a young chap whose name escapes me (due to my age!) Anyway we all ate a hearty meal followed by a few cafe calvas. It was late and very dark when during our drinking session we heard a lot of horn blowing and looking out of the window saw a truck had pulled off the park into the road in front of another vehicle. We all said “What a wally!” or words to that effect. However, a little later we decided to leave and get a few miles down the road. It was when we got outside that we realised the truck that pulled across the road was the unattended PBC D1000 which was up the bank on the other side of the road between two oak trees. The driver had parked it on the ‘dead man’, not the handbrake. It had run out of air and being on a slope ran away! Unbelievably there was not a scratch on it but he couldn’t get in the cab as the oak tree each side was close to each door. We put a chain on the back of the trailer and the driver of the boat transport truck pulled it backwards with his front tow-hitch. Everyone then was able to carry on as if nothing had happened but it did give us a laugh and something to talk about for days after. Another day in the life of a driver ha ha. Nobby.

Hi Nobby, yet another great tale mate, and also a reminder of the comeraderie that existed
between drivers…ie socialising together and helping each other out.
Now I know that was the norm back in the day, though you and others go back to before my
time over the water…1976 was my first adventure to foreign lands.
Sadly though, as we are all aware comeraderie rarely exists these days, and hasn’t done for
quite a few years now…I,m not saying it’s disappeared altogether but it’s certainly not the norm anymore.
My driving days are over now it seems and I have to say that i,m not gonna miss it at all.
Now missing it as it used to be, now that’s a different story…and would I do it all again ■■
Too right I would, but ONLY if we could turn back the clock.

Hi Tone & Nobby here is some thing of a tale I posted on Shipping in and out of Poole thread did not know how to move it so scanned it hope it comes out ok Buzzer.

Hello Jacko, here is another picture of a Bakers MAN, ROW 205M. This one was driven by my uncle Phil Dibden. I think this picture was taken at Romsey carnival with me and my cousin getting in the way of the MAN!

Hi Tone,

Sorry to be picky, but shouldn’t that be 1876 was my first adventure ? :unamused: :unamused:

Hi LR Man,

I seem to recall Phil worked for Eric for a number of years.

Regards
Richard

Now come on Richard, that was a bit below the belt.
Good job I know ya…oh and by the way, i,m still waiting for that phone call… :unamused: :unamused:

Phil Dibden…I worked with Phil at Transport Services…smashing bloke with a wry sense of humour.
I believe he’s living in Weston Super Mare now…
L R Man…if you’re in touch with him perhaps you’d be kind enough to give him my regards…Thanks.

Buzzer…yes I,d already read that when you posted it on the Poole thread.
Reminded me of the time I was towed unit only from Chalon back to Le Havre on a bar.
I was driving for you at the time…I,ll fill in the details later…Too late now.

Now I do remember being with a group of Southampton drivers when Gazzer was being towed behind a Rawlings tilt after “The Joker” was smashed up, think it was Turin. Several offered to do a stint for Gaz but he stuck her out all the way to Le Havre but was mucked when he got there. Not an easy thing to do especially as think the screen was bust and it was hissing down some of the way and you always thought you were going to get a tug from the gendarmes. There must have been about six of us all together just like a mini convoy, Buzzer.
