Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

charlie one:
A little memory for any ex R and A Transport drivers. Screaming round Hambarn Roundabout yesterday in my supercharged Citreon C3 I overtook a German lorry.Glancing at the name as I went roaring by I saw a name from the past. WV Expedition of Stuttgart. Did not know they were still going. Any info MaggieD ? Regards Charlie

What was the name of the lad who was on for them, really nice guy, owner driver parked in Lorraine’s? Had a VW tilt and an Iveco, later replaced by a white scania. Sure he lived over marchwood way. Always used to come in the yard Friday afternoon and borrow the forklift to put his groupage in some sort of order. We never went short of Hock or the old Liebfraumilch in exchange!

Hi Buzzer

You might need the beef transfered, we’ll see if the old girl start,

Hi DISPATCHER believe Hills had quite a few cattle trucks in the day, what’s with the glass front bit to that trailer may be it was for the farmer to go to market in the truck his cattle went in, funny that cheers Buzzer.

Looks ideal for kipping in on a night out. :unamused:

Here’s a couple of parking tickets from when I drove for
Smith of Maddiston. 5p cheaper in Cannock than in Doncaster…happy days.

Hi Charlie and Horry,

You have good memories yes I believe Jurgen is still running WV and the chap that you refer to Horry is Dave Meaton who lived (lives) in North Baddesley I’ve lost touch with him which is no good as he is godfather to Nick our eldest son :unamused:

Kind regards
Richard

Hi all, I went to Gaydon today with Paul Nichols to keep Jimski company for a while
who was there displaying some of his brilliant models.
Bumped into another couple of Sotonians there…Mick Hennessy and his son Mark.
Also met a few other posters from Trucknet there, including the one and only Ashley Coghill.
I forgot to get his autograph.
The last Truckshow I went to was in 1972/3 at Earls Court. :unamused: :unamused:

Any one know a chap called Bob English, the name rings a bell yet another gone to that big truck park upstairs RIP sure someone will recall him, had a feeling he was on for British Int or Cabmont any one know, Buzzer.

Bloody hell Buzzer, that,s sad news…I worked with Bob English at Fred Crouchers
and later at Sea Route…last time I saw Bob many years ago he was driving for BKG.
May he rest in peace and condolences to his family.

Just an edit…bob wasn,t at Fred Crouchers, I was thinking of another Bob…Pester.
He was at SRF though and BKG.

Tone my Mrs spotted that in tonights Echo, JD.

Thanks for that JD, there has of late been far too many friends and colleagues
leaving us…makes you wonder who,s gonna be next.
I suppose it,s an inevitability as we get older aye…still sad though.

Another Southampton company, Buzzer.

A great show at Gaydon, and an honour to meet Jimski and Mappo. Nice to put names to faces, now I know what at least two of you look like when I’m doing my weekly catch up of this thread. Thanks too Jim for introducing me to Mark Compton, and congratulations on your well deserved trophy.
Nick.

Before we slip to page 2:

This came up on a Facebook page. Local registration number, I’m racking my brains as to whose it was originally.

I was in ADM Erith today and who should be alongside me in the queue was Lenny (Mad Lenny) Passingham driving for Mid-Hants Bulk. He’s doing some temporary driving due to driver shortage. Not bad for 74.

In converstation he mentioned his first VOLVO for Warrens…OAA248P…the very vehicle I couldn’t place. He drove it from new.

He has noted the August bash in his diary so it doesn’t clash with any golfing dates.

My memories of him were being able to drink Richard G, Hobee and Polly under the table and still get on the ferry!

Regarding the Volvo Gazzer, small world innit.
As for Lenny, I guess I should know him but I,m getting seriously concerned
about my memory. :unamused: :unamused:

I never even thought to take a photo!
