Cracking model again Jim…well done

a couple from Strongs Brewery of Romsey…

Colin

Colin,

Great pics as usual, the ones of the brewery in Romsey, together with Jim’s model of Jeremy’s truck brought back memories of a sad occasion.

John, who ran Woolston freight with his son Andy in Lorraines, the scene of many of your pics,(and Horry washing trucks :unamused: ) asked me if I could give a friend of his Malcolm a driving job as he was out of work.
I gave him a start driving a new Renault Turboliner, and sent him into the old Strongs brewery to load, which by that time, 1986 had become Whitbreads, around 9am I got a phone call from him to say one of Sheddicks Newport had reversed into the front of the Renault whilst he was loading, and would I come and make sure everything was OK,I was there in 20 mins. to find Jeremy loading up,asked him where Malcolm was told me he was in the cab getting the accident paperwork sorted,I went over to find poor Malcolm across the seats he had suffered a massive heart attack and there was nothing anyone could do for him,I don’t know if the stress of the accident had caused it ? R.I.P. Malcolm.

Regards
Richard

sad story that Richard…I had a cousin who was driving for Hovis out of the docks, he failed to return after a trip and they eventually traced his lorry to fleet services and unfortunately found he had died from a heart attack in his cab.

lets cheer things up…

Southampton/Hampshire registrations but no idea if they belonged to local firms…do you know?

Colin

The second tractor unit I ever had was one just like that but a 1971 J reg Mammoth Minor twin steer, it came from a fella in Gillingham Dorset who used it to pull for Frigoscandia, I used to haul round timber at the time with a very robust 33ft Doughty trailer which I believe was built in Poole any way the twin steer was not for of road work so I got Dave Coombes to take out the second steer axle and ended up with a long wheel base tractor unit but this was far more effective when of road, eventually I had a sleeper cab put on by a couple of lads from the local crash repair garage and although it was a bit heath robinson it beat kipping across the engine bonnet on a couple of boards which was common place in the day, another Mary Hopkins moment, cheers Buzzer.
PS. The reg on my truck was SMW 608 J .

Just for interest sake, what gross weight would that Trader and 4 in-line run at 24 ton? I know,I know, what the true answer would have been,“any weight you cared to put on it” in those days  Cheers Bewick.
