Gatt66:
Hi, anyone remember my parents, Tony Gatrell and Lesley Gatrell, A I Gatrell Ltd based at Hardley Industrial Estate, Hythe, Haulage and Warehousing, used to do a lot for RHM Flour Mills out of the docks, ISR Rubber to Membury, Silver Trout to Billingsgate Fish Market as well as other general haulage. Last tractor unit sold, a White Magirus Deutz 310 (POR 796S) was sold to John Dennis John Dennis T’pt/Hythe Transport) Is it still stuck in the corner of a yard somewhere?
Will try and dig out some photo’s when I get a chance.
George Legg, one of our drivers, unforgettable, another Compo from last of the summer wine with my dad from the start until the last truck was sold. Still around and nearly 90
Company is still going, warehouses/offices now workshops and offices are rented out.

Hi Gatt66 John Davies here aka Davies International Transport I used to be on the rubber run to Yatesbury on the old airfield run by Symes of Calne,i remember you had two trucks on this job the afore mentioned Maggie driven by Geoff and an old F88,i also had two motors at the time an F88 driven by Stan Mathews RIP my first driver I took on and a Mandator I drove myself. Two loads a day and we knew every pothole and bump in that route.Your chaps and us worked together foldind sheets at Yatesbury as this was far easier especially if the wind was up or it was raining,SFM also did loads to there and occasionally Whitehorns but they uasually went to Membury. When we had discharged our second load we all headed for a little café on the A4 heading back to Malmesbury where we partook in a cup of tea and a bun and a chat, then your trucks went back to load for the following day and we went for diesel thus avoiding a holdup in the loading bays at ISR,good old days and we used to get £72 a load up and £30 for a back load of salt which was stored at Yatesbury so the money wasn’t bad either, definitely a Mary Hopkin moment, cheers Buzzer.

Hi John, thanks for the update about Yatesbury, I knew there was another site the rubber went to but I couldn’t remember where it was, I was going to ask my dad at the weekend, I’ll have to get him to join the forum as well,I only joined myself a couple of days ago, I didn’t remember you running with him but I was quite young at the time but used to go on runs with my dad and Geoff (Geoff Rice), Geoff’s still around and spoke to his son recently who said he was living around Exeter somewhere. I can remember Whitehorns though! I used to speak to your son Steven quite a bit and met him a couple of times when I worked at TIP Trailer Rental (18 years I was there) if I’d known I’d have tried to catch up with you then. He might remember me, I’m Group Transport Manager for SHB Hire now, the diesel must run through my veins, Cheers Andy

Hi all , it’s Baldrick… I have man flu so have spent hours today online reading this thread from page 1…

Amazing stories…and memories…

I think I was about 10 years behind Charlie and Pat…maybe more. Although was with Scorey P at Cabmont. Yes he had his lump hammer…

I have an idea… about a new thread… MUSIC… remember when we had cassettes… ?

What was your fave? And what memories? Charlie… NO, not James Last…

Mine was War of The Worlds… heading for Dover on the old A2 in a brand new F10, and Genesis en route to Lisbon…in the Shady era…

I can’t tell a lie Buzzer, and have to admit that on the odd occasion when under
the influence I did indulge…especially when week ended in Barcelona. :astonished:
Good old Ramblas.

Hi Tony,

Angela’s cousins the Rossi Brothers from Salerno Southern Italy, have sent me this photo, taken on the Strada d’mille Culli, showing a driver under the influence being revived by a young man who the Rossi Brothers seem to think lives in this area !!

They asked me if it may be a man known to them as T.I.R. Tone ? as they are coming to visit us next week and would like to speak to him  I explained it could not be him as he is wearing jeans and trainers, not shorts and sandals :unamused:

They have offered a prize of 50 lira to whoever can name the unconscious chap on the floor :unamused: :unamused: As the DKV card he paid for services rendered was declined, as it belonged to Charlieone and ran out in 1963

Regards
Ricardo

Hi,

Tony the chap you are trying to revive :unamused: is a Southampton driver, still driving today !

Charlie the Rossi Bros are breaking their journey at Four Marks for some reason :unamused:
