Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Someting else I was thinking about. I remember Winkie Talman working for two brothers when he first got his licence…they had a small yard near the Bishops Waltham Country Club (Jeez I got some tales about that place too!! :open_mouth: ) was it Treadwell or something. They had a Transcon as i recall…

Cheers, Balders.

Hi Baldrick,

Here’s “Winkie” I think he’s working for Wyvern Cargo,my son Nick saw him in Fleet Services a few weeks ago, although he hadn’t seen Winkie for 15 years he recognised him, last time I saw him was at Pete Mongers funeral (R.I.P)

Regards
Richard

hi Richard , many thank’s for the info and the pic of Winkie. I thought it was Kid Jensen at first…
Is that a younger you to his right…seem to recognise you so guess our paths crossed at some time… hope I don’t still owe you a fiver from the 70’s… . Kind regards… Stuart.

Hi Balders

Your making the memory cells work overtime now, only two names come to mind at the momoent,
I don’t know if either lived in Outlands Lane.
Auther Cave (RIP) but i seem to think that was on the A1 and not in Wales.
Bill Jacobs but I dont think either him or his brother Walt lived in Curdridge could have been Botley.
Another who used the Railway quite alot and lived in the caravan site at the rear was Charlie Knight (had a glass eye)
and did enjoy lots of liquid refreshment.
Memory is shot now!!!

regards dispatcher

Hi Tribsa , thanks for the info mate…

Dispatcher: I remember Charlie from the railway days. Not him or the others… I’ve just realised I made a mistake…the bloke I’m thinking of lived in Swanwick Lane not Outlands Lane! In a big old Victorian house right at the very end , opposite Moodys Boat Yard. ( Buzzer will know the house…) . However this was in the late 80’s and am not sure if he would have been living there in the 70’s when he worked for Hills… ■■? The plot thickens… Either we have to wait for the grey cells to warm up or maybe now with the correct info you might get it? Cheers for now , Balders…

Thats made it easy.
Peter Howlett (Cpt Birdseye) worked at Hills quite along time, I am sure the Incedent was in Shoreham
involed 6 or seven cars, and never lost his HGV

Well done!!! Ok, you get your cigar!!! You’re probably right with Shoreham…particularly as I even got where he lived mixed up! Is Pete still with us??

Hi Colin,

Thanks for all your A - Z pics especially the R & A ones I didn’t have a pic of G870 WBP, and I think “young” Ian Marriner,Jim’s son will like the one of E282 XVS.

I’m sorry to hear that mate… I shared a workshop with him in Warsash for a short while in the 80’s . A mad idea about restoring old classic cars… but at least I ended up with a decent TR6

I saw this on the way up in January. The Spanish have finally made it into Europe. The old saying: Never let a Daygo by…probably 'cos you won’t get past him later!
