Hi Roolecat yes spot on
I remember my dad used to sometimes take us (my brother and sister) there on a Sunday afternoon some 50+ odd years ago after a long walk in town, sometimes to Mayflower Park, after 10 o’clock mass at St Edmunds Church in the Avenue, he knew the landlord and he used to let us (the kids) sit in the empty Saloon bar at the back for lemonade and crisps! We used to come out the back of the pub by a stonemasons yard. We would also sometimes go to the garden of the small wooden pub at the bottom of the High Street opp the Hythe Ferry, The Sun■■? On other Sundays, after a walk through the common we would go in the garden of the Bassett, I remember they had a stuffed bear in the games room!!! Then it was always home for the best Sunday Roast in the world that dear old mum had been making whilst we were away.
As JD would say more MH moments
Regards Pat
Hi Pat the pub your on about used to be called the Sun, on the corner of Winkle Street, if memory serves me ! And I remember the Big White Bear in a glass case out the back of the Bassett to, Blimey always thought I’d seen you some where before Pat !!
But no Roast for me ! Bread and Dripping !
Regards Jimski
I can’t place the “Edinburgh Arms” at all in Six Dials. Which corners was it on?
pat
i think they knocked the pub down to make way for part of
the one way system and the beginning of what is now kingsway
my grandad collected old timber when they were demolishing
it to make bundles of kindling this is how he made a living
there were many other old buildings at the other end of
st marys st that were demolished about the same time so
that kingsway could go to the docks but as always with
southampton roads they never quite make it to there
planed destination perhaps you can confirm this info

Hi Gary The Edinburgh was on the corner of St Marys road north of the Six Dials roundabout virtually opposite the Bridge Tavern Pub (Now an art gallery/shop I think!

As Les writes Six Dials was a famous Southampton landmark in its day it was a quite small roundabout with as it’s name suggests six roads coming off it or put another way 3 crossroads. I quite agree with Les Southampton Town Council (it was still a town not a city) made a pigs ear of the redevelopment demolishing many homes and businesses.
They tried a one way system that took east bound traffic northwards towards St Mathew’s Church then back southwards along Brintons road to rejoin Northam Road whilst west bound traffic went straight through. As I said many homes and businesses were lost and what did the put on that land a great big car park if my memory serves me right! This was all changed again at a later date to what we have now.
Regards Pat
Did a google search and found these
Firstly a link to a pic of the railway bridge in St mary’s Road during the war after a bomb during the blitz, I think Shirt King was later built over that bridge where the Finaly & Co shop is, the Bridge Tavern is to the right hand side of the pic.

Just noticed your on page two Pat,so here’s a pic i took at our yard today as i was out with two of my horses delivering a bread pudding i made for the boys on a weekend break at the yard, they were doing roast beef and trimings and were having the bread pudding with custard for afters.Noticed a merc standing there but only a demo from last week cant see them being introduced in blue and white, cheers Buzzzer.
Allowing for the camera optical distortion it makes the FH cab look “small”.
