Few hauliers relish the thought of manoeuvring through its streets or coughing up for its various zone charges, but a new study has found London is the best city to work as an HGV driver.

The capital came top of a study to find the city that offered drivers the best salary, job opportunities and living costs.

Breakwells Transport said it used thousands of salary reports, job availability data and cost of living statistics and London came out as the best, scoring 7.96 out of 10.

The company said it offered “unmatched salary opportunities with an average HGV driver salary of £44,311.

“While living costs are higher, 33.6% of a driver’s income typically goes toward non-rent expenses, leaving a significant portion of earnings available.”

Bristol came second with a score of 6.42, reflecting “excellent job availability and manageable living costs.

“Drivers spend just 28.8% of their income on living expenses, allowing them to retain more of their earnings compared to other cities.”

Birmingham was third with 6.29, Reading fourth with 6.22 and Liverpool fifth with 6.06.
