Right, working Monday, first drop Bristol, then second Wheddon Cross near Minehead.
I know the road through Bridgwater past Nether Stowey is not too brilliant, especially after you are diverted off the non HGV ‘A’ road to Minehead, on to the ‘B’ road,.
I also know the road off the M5 through Taunton has a low bridge.
So the only other way (afaik) is the longest route, down M5 to Tiverton, and take the Bampton road northwards to Wheddon Cross.

So which way would you reckon is best, …and can you get around those low bridges on the Taunton road.
Cheers.

Take the long route as the northern route is no good , fun enough in a 26t :open_mouth:

Yeh I’ve done it a couple of times, that narrow uphill bit is a bit dodgy with weight on if you meet something coming towards you, but not so much weight on Monday… just wanted opinions.
How many more miles is the long route via Tiverton do you reckon?

Don’t know , hopefully a local will be along soon

Your choice my friend but I always go A39 tgen B3190 to Raleigh Cross then follow the black lorry route signs to Wheddon Cross and beyond (park nr pub at Wheddon Cross sometimes) up and down and watch your mirrors in places but overall nit a bad road to be honest mate

I’m a class 2 driver but I deliver to the petrol station at Wheddon Cross.

You cannot physically get a trailer through Dunster, so that’s not an option.
Your other options are A358 from Taunton but restricted height to 4ft 2in, I ‘think’.
‘Proper’ HGV route is A39 Bridgwater to Washford Cross then up long steep pig of a country lane (B3190) to Raleighs Cross then on to Wheddon Cross. Not recommended if you are heavy. I have seen the murco tanker going up there however.
Another option and probably the easiest drive is indeed from Tiverton off A361 at Bolham, continuing onwards past Dulverton. Again, not a great road but is a HGV route.

Now, the big problem in Wheddon Cross is the buildings at the crossroads itself. You can’t turn right or left from any direction in a lorry, e.g you can only ever go straight ahead. To get around this, the HGV route goes on a big loop via Winsford, Withypool and Exford, to come back to the western side of Wheddon Cross.
So you need to know the exact location of the address.

Thanks for that mate, I have as I say used both roads, my drop is straight over that restricted crossroads down by the cattle mart…in fact last time I tipped there I got back on to the Tiverton road through the pub car park as a short cut  (asked landlord first)

I was curious to know which route the regular lads who went there, and the locals took.

I notice nobody has mentioned a diversion around the bridges on the Taunton road, so assuming it’s a non starter eh?

Thanks everybody anyway, I’ll decide tomorrow and weigh up the situation as to which way, edging towards the longer easier Tiverton route, but depends on times.

That must be one hell of a low bridge. :open_mouth:

Jeez Rob I used to deliver to that area quite a bit donkeys years ago with a 4 wheeler bulker so probs for me then, ideal route
would be A358 to Bishops Lydeard TL onto B3224 but no go for you because of low bridge, no help from me then…

My son is suggesting M5 J27 A361 to Tiverton, A396 to Wheddon Cross but TL to Winsford before reaching WCross, following
road thro Winsford till you meet B3223 TR towards Wheddon Cross brings you to where you want to be.

Have a look on Google Earth road from A396 to Winsford marked as Edbrooke rd then from middle of village marked as Exford rd.

Hope Cosmic or someone else reads this and gives their opinion.
Please feel to call me names if this is bollox.

Won’t be calling you names bud  .
Thanks anyway.

Update Rob, on further interrogation of boy he says turn off to Winsford is a Y type junction and although shown on
map as a white road there is a white line up the middle of road.
Post how you eventually get there, interested.
Norman.

Doh! should have been 4.2m
Sorry, was too early on a Sunday, especially after clocks changed.

That looks like an awful place to have to go in an artic, and one where that if you were to let it your sat nav could easily get you in the ■■■. The kind of drop where you’ve actually got to use your brain!

Norman.

The guy said he wanted the stuff and he would take it early evening, so no rush.
So I went the most direct way via Bridgewater/Minehead road, and picked up the 2 B roads to Wheddon Cross.

Sod’s law met another artic… on the worst part to meet another artic :unamused: , the narrow bit on the hill, but we both scraped through.
Thanks for the input everybody anyway.

There are a couple of ways round the bridge at bishops lydeard , officially you can take the road to Wiveliscombe , turn sharp right after the roundabout in wivey , not a great road but rejoins the bishops lydeard /Raleghs cross road at the cross roads at the bottom of the steep hill

Unofficially, turn in past Bishops lydeard station, across Ash Priors common, take the 2nd right, then bear right, and rejoin the road at the lydeard st Lawrence x roads , it’s single track and got blue unsuitable for Hgv signs , but regularly used by chicken lorries and loads of straw

That’s not a bad way, probably 15 minutes longer than the Raleghs cross way, but there’s a 15"3" bridge at Exbridge! There’s a signed lorry route to avoid it, brings you to the heathpault cross, just up from Wheddon Cross
