Hi Ad-Voc,
Denis F would probably be your first port of call on here. (UNLESS RULES AND REGS HAVE CHANGED*) Would help to know what you would be moving livestock for (as in how long the duration would be)? Would it be from Lands End to John O’Groats or simply from farm to market, which is a couple of minutes up the road?

*They probably have knowing my luck

its mostly farm to farm gathering up cattle to get a load then set of to the kill house which would be 85km not counting the running about which wud mean the frist cow could be on the wagon close to the 8 hour mark. but then i dont want just to get the cattle ticket as sure the mate could say for example go lift pigs or so and take them to ireland and iam left not able to do it.

Hi Gents, long time lurker (only just registered on here though) but first time poster.

I come from a farming background and the family runs a haulage business as well, so I can help out a bit but may not be entirely accurate with details.

To move livestock for hire or reward nowadays you need a Transport of Animals CPC which is are City and Guilds ticket. As far as I can remember it’s the sort that you only need to take the once as they last for life. There are a number of different tickets dependant upon what you are going to carry, for instance I hold the Cattle & Sheep (that’s one ticket) and the pig ticket, I believe there is a separate one for Poultry and one for Horses.

Also there are two “bands” so to speak, up to 8 hours and over 8 hours. The up to 8 hours ticket is purely a “theory” test whereby you get lectured on what should and shouldn’t be done, the way the air flows through the box etc. etc. Whereas the over 8 hours test you also have to have a mini driving test so to speak whereby the examiner has to go for a ride with you for a while.

One other thing, this counts for whether you drive a pick up and trailer or a four decker…

I hope this helps.

A couple of other points have sprung to me as well since last posting.

  1. It’s for when you are doing it for Hire or Reward, so if it is your own stock then you won’t need one.

  2. It is for when you are going to be moving them more than 50km.

Hence my point number 2. I meant point 1 as if you had your own stock and you are moving them just down the road in your own truck and trailer or if you have your own lorry.

In my opinion it’s just another way of the “officials” to try to catch out the hauliers. In the years I have held the CPC (I think it is nearly 4 years now) I have only ever had it checked once, and that was when trying to get onto the Royal Berkshire showground at Newbury with a load of show cattle on, never even been asked for one when doing market / abatoir run.
