Licence codes 107 &119

I’ve checked my returned licence and the copy of the previous one which agree. I have all groups bus and lorry so C1, C and CE & D1,D and DE however C1E has a 107 code “not more than 8250 kg” and D1E has a 101 code “not for hire and reward”.

I am puzzled, I can add 750 kg trailer to 7500 kg to arrive at 8250 but to quote GovUK: “You can drive C1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg.The combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of both cannot exceed 12,000kg.” so why is there a 107 code?

DE has the same Gov UK sentence about the trailer MAM. What I don’t get is “not for hire and reward”. If I can drive any large PSV with or without trailer "for hire and reward " then why can’t I drive a D1E for hire and reward? The rather complicated minibus regulations regarding hire and reward refer to the operator.

I also have a 119 code against D1E " weight limit for vehicle does not apply". But PCV definition for D1 is based upon the number of seats and the vehicle length. Gov UK: “You can drive vehicles with: no more than 16 passenger seats a maximum length of 8 metres a trailer up to 750kg”

1200 is for C1E without 107 code

H+W means commercial so ok for private use

Thanks. Soory but I had got the last two paragraphs wrong, but I have now put right the errors in the original and title. The query about hire and reward is regarding D1E.

However I can’t find 1200 code on Gov UK list nor H & W. H seems to be under vehicle category tracked vehicle.

I’ve held C since 1974 CE since 1978 and D & DE since 2008 my previous D having lapsed.

DE covers D1E so you can drive any of those for hire and reward

If you have a pre 97 car licence then only the free D1 and D1E categories are shown but you still have those again covered by full DE

Can get confusing when you have 2 of the same categories on the licence

Same goes for C1 and C1E when you have CE

Thanks very much Rog.

That was what I thought since the alternative restriction on both smaller vehicle categories doesn’t make sense if there is a test pass effectively upgrading the entitlement granted to pre 1997 car test drivers.

Thanks again.

The codes ‘101’ ‘107’ are used on licences issued to folk that gained a category B entitlement (not exceeding 3.5 tonnes or 8 passenger seats) prior to 1st January 1997, sometimes known as ‘acquired rights’ or ‘grandfather rights’. At that time the rules gave you additional entitlement to drive a vehicle with more than 8 passenger seats but not exceeding 16 passenger seats but not for ‘hire and reward.’ And vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass. A trailer not exceeding 750Kg could be towed behind either vehicle. Rules got further complicated by allowing heavier trailer to be towed behind smaller vehicles but let’s not go there.

When you pass LGV or PCV tests you gain ‘C’ and ‘D’ entitlements and may also gain entitlement for those vehicles to tow large trailers, ‘E.’ These additional entitlements will overrule the restrictions shown next to the acquired rights entitlement.

If you were to loose the LGV or PCV entitlement, for example you don’t pass the medical or the TC revokes your entitlement because you’ve been a naughty person. Then you revert to the C1 with a 7.5 tonnes limit and the D1 with the ‘not for hire/reward.’ It’s just DVLAs way of showing you got the entitlement by acquired rights rather than passing a vehicle specific test.

An additional point to note, if you have acquired rights C1 or D1 you will now loose those entitlements if your licence is revoked. The only way to get them back is to pass the appropriate vehicle based tests.

If you go online and view your licence, you will likely find the same as I do, which is that you have C1 twice, with different expiry dates for the entitlements.

Regarding the 119 code, this is probably something to do with when you passed your test.
