Isn’t there a Martian in that yard down at Avonmouth with all the old stuff in it? most of it looks like it hasn’t moved for years.

Hello Dave

I’ve received some PM’s but it would seem not others. No replies to mine of 10th & 15h Nov. Wonder if you received those? If you scroll down from the PM read box you should be able to see the whole thread. A location would be really useful

… and as has been said before that goes for all members who don’t show their location & then ask questions like “who’s the best agency in my area” etc.

driverone uk… i have actually answered all nicoming messages but it seems some get lost in cyberspace
the latest being my location which is nth norfolk in the wells fakenham cromer triangle… i noted you located a AEC but before i can give a definitive ,yes or no i need basic info regarding condition location, and preparedness to work ect
not the actual sale address, just a rough idea… in any event i appreciate ur time and effort in the location of this truck regards dave… pss i have told my business partner the price guide, and i think this may be within limits proving the truck measures to requirements…and is not a vehical already known to us…

short walk:
Remember our QM dept at 5 Hy Regt RA had 1 of these beasts in Hildesheim back in early 80’s, it would literally go anywhere and never remember it getting stuck as it roamed round Hohne ranges delivering our scran and ammo. Dont recall it being petrol tho, can’t imagine the cost of even firing it up these days if it is. Good luck, am sure one or two still be around.

Yes the RR B81 was a straight eight petrol lump, although listening to that movie clip I could hear a turbo whistle, don’t remember them having a turbo when I was in.
While the straight eight takes up some room,in that first pic the bonnet looks longer than standard.
Although they had a two speed transfer box,a four speed main box was a pain in the arse.
I think on the road they were 22 tons, then they were superceded by the “New lightweight” AEC Militant which came in at 23 tons.
I still think the old Scammell took some beating!
A lot of ex military Martians have had the hydraulic gear replaced with twin boom wrecking gear.
There is still one in white at the side of the M5 n/b just before j23,been there years.

LL you have PM

You’re right, they were naturally aspirated… some would say asphyxiated!

Agree about that bonnet on the pic I posted; could well be that it’s not actually a British army job originally. Leyland did a helluva lot of export stuff in those days.

Leighton Lad, you have PM.

Went out of my way and spent quite some time and phone calls to try and help this poster find a suitable vehicle.

I did find an AEC Militant 6x6 diesel Recovery, ready to go to work and just about within budget. I PM’d him the vehicle and contact details, also mentioned here I had PM’d him. It has been read.

Not a peep out of him since, not even a “thanks very much for your efforts, I’ve got fixed up.”

also found an item on ebay and pm’d op and never got a reply or a thanks, won’t bother next time :stuck_out_tongue:

Our Martian is currently ‘resting’ at the Vintage Vehicle Museum at Shildon.
It’s on crane duty there.

Mind, it’s still all complete, intact and running right, everything works, so we could use it for a job if we needed it

having just been released from hospital i was not in aposition to comment on those who posted helpful replies to my post so now i can thank those who made suggestions and to those who gave time to help me locate the truck i looked for . and to suggest i was both ignorant and remiss in posting my thanks will sit heavily

How could we know that LL? I hope you are recovered sufficiently to enjoy Xmas.

On the other hand it is not unusual for people to come on here seeking advice etc. Many people put in their time & effort to respond then the OP never returns to the topic they posted. We had no way of knowing you weren’t yet just one more of these and hope you can see it from the other side that it can be irritating.

thanks driverone
and of course i understand your point of view
but for the rapidity of my illness i would most certainly have continued the thread
and now that strength returns i will actively continue the search

Rolls-Royce engine BTW… PETROL! :open_mouth:

That’s good then. You can convert it to LPG easily and drive it at the fraction of the cost.

This is the reason why these: truck1-pl.com/img/Ciezarowka … 346040.jpg and likes are still so popular in Poland
