Leyland600:
Hi Robert, You cannot get a better double decker than a PD2 especially a Leyland bodied one !! They were not that bad compared to a number of other makes.
Cheers Leyland 600
It was a bit heavy on the steering, even for a non-power-assisted bus but it was lovely to drive and certainly not short of power. Robert

Tilcon used them on a night trunk from the Forest of Dean to West Drayton. The forward-thinking transport manager realised that he could save fuel by bringing two empty lorries back for the price of one- he hitched two together by means of an A-frame. Apparently it was a success until he found out that the two drivers were squashing themselves in the one cab in order to prevent freezing to death!
Tilcon used Foden eight leggers with Gardner 180’s on days and night to West Drayton from the Gore, and some of the day drivers would come back and do a load to Hereford after that.
Cheers Dave.

The Gore drivers were on bonus Casey, and they still drove like hell after the bonus ended. Some seriously quick eight legger drivers there in the 70’ and 80’s.
Cheers Dave.

Own account haulage was always a better job than trying to earn a living off the work that no-one else wanted!
However, I have to admit that I liked the idea of a different job every day. I would probably have got bored carrying stone and earning too much bonus every day!

Yes it was boring going to the same places a lot of the time, the only downside really. I left and went to a firm where I was paid on earnings, more variety, more tarmac, and I was much happier. How some of the lads put up with doing 6 or 7 loads a day to the same concrete works for 20+ years or three loads to Lichfield daily beats me, I suppose at least they knew what you were doing?

Does anyone know if the early Daf CF75s (same as the Alpha 2) had a Leyland-derived engine? My 02 reg one has a very nice howl when working hard.
Are you back on the Tippers yet Nathan !! Cheers Dennis.

Yes, I am Dennis (see the Oxfordshire thread mate).
I posted a photo a year ago of a somewhat ‘mongrelised’ Bison I bought from Malta. It’s been steady progress over the last 12 months, the joys of being an owner driver mean the money needs to be spent on the truck that earns you the money, as you’re well aware! The Daf CF steer axle has now been replaced with an original Alford & Alder axle, the bumper has been put back to original and so has one step (the other still needs to be repaired), all on temporary as they’ll be put on properly after spraying. correct handbrake valve now fitted, original type air cleaner currently being repaired. Hopefully fitting original type drive axles over christmas and a couple of other jobs…
