Legislation: Expired photos do not invalidate driving licenc

…This past year, in my capacity as a motoring law solicitor, I’ve heard of a number of instances where 4b on the licence has caused confusion. It’s the date at which your photo expires or, as the reverse of the licence puts it, ‘licence valid to’.

However, this is where the confusion starts as it suggests the licence itself expires on that date, which it doesn’t.

To find the actual expiry date, look at column 11 on the back of your licence …

:arrow_right: Just to make clear that the Expire Date on Front of License expires only the Card (Photo) but for expire Date of Your Driving Entitlement see on Back of Your Driving License behind the Category.

I was struggling to understand the link you posted and your quote from it.
So thank you for you own explanation which made it much clearer
Regards. John.

Am I reading correctly Immigrant, British DL has different expiration dates? One for the card itself and one for the driving entitlements A, B, C, CE, D etc?

My licence shows my normal entitlements run until I’m 70, but those that require a medical (like C & C+E) run until then.
I think this is why on the front under 4b, it shows a shorter expiry date…

British DL is different then most European then. Mine is valid for 5 years and that’s it, then have to replace it with new one. No expiration date on entitlements.

On the Front on 4b is the Expire Date of Photo (after 10 Year),or as of HGV Drivers for Medical Reason after 5 Year.

In my Case:
When i got my Photo Card License i had no Diabetes.
Then, after 5 Year the DVLA Medical Centre needed more Time and the 5 Year for my HGV started on 30th January, the Date DVLA signed the License for another 5 Year. Now my Photo expired on 15th December 2015,but my HGV Entitlement lasts till 29th January 2016.
:arrow_right: I could drive without changing Photo till 29th January 2016,but could be fined for a outdated Photo/Photo on License not updated.
But as the Application to update my Photo with License and D2 and D4 was sent, would i not get fined and can drive till 29th January 2016,or longer if new License arrives and showes new Date.

The first part was copied and pasted from the article that he linked.

School’s are back in tomorrow, should see a few less post’s from this clown

Basic mistake. Photo expires before licence expires.

He’s a ■■■■■ troll.

Yawn…

Thank you please

I believe that if you drive with an expired photo - it’s treated the same in law as if you drive with an out-of-date address because you’ve moved since, and not bothered to inform DVLA…

You get busted.

It’s just another one of those pitfalls that should have been best avoided by the regular 5 year licence renewal including a photo FFS. :unamused:

My photo expires in 2018…my licence expires 2016, and i only renewed photo 2 yrs ago, but my licence gets renewed every year under medical scrutiny with DVLA. I did try the photo renewal after reading the post by ROG, but it didnt work for me, i did however get my new licence with the union jack on.
