Cheers for the reply Ossie. At the time i sat on the boat with Clive he had that Magnum as you said & he was talking about jacking it all in.
The Old man is on for Matthew Kibble now doin a night trunk but is looking at finding something part time soon.
Spoke on facebook with Dave Stallman only last week & as you said he is loving retierment!
Great to hear some stories of good old Leggetts!
I worked in the Swindon dept from about 1996-1998.
I worked in the traffic office with Terry Carr and Roger Fawcett. Terrry was facntastic, really nice bloke.
I’m terrible with surnames, but I remembers these from the office: Nina, Judy, Michelle. I can’t remember who the depot manage was at the time? Also there was Terry the warehouse supervisor who went off to Tawny Transport in Blagrove and scottish Alan in the warehouse too.
Too many drivers to remember by name, but their faces are still with me - especially Turbo who did the Woolies run!
I’ve contacted PointBid to see if anyone knows where Terry Carr is today, would be good to speak to him again.
Anyone remember me?
Just found out that Chris G drives for the company I work for now. I didn’t recognise him without the moustache.
He says he was one of the last drivers at Swindon, before it closed November 2006.
how is Chris G ? he was the best day agency driver that Swindon had it took a long time before he got on to the Swindon books when you see him just mention C495 DGS !!! here he is complete with tash in X987 MKM
managed to take a look at the old Swindon depot today 23/7/13 not much has changed still overgrown a little plus of course new ownership but still the same old Swindon
I wonder if the rear step of my old LDV van is still under the security portacabin.
my uncle “wilf warwick” worked at the peterlee depot, not sure what his job was but was in the office, i used to be in & out of there regular doing curtain repairs for dawson rentals at the time. both being 2004 onwards i think
here is something that some of you will remember from the later years
made it so much easier than having to write out each worksheet by hand
Those are for the day after I was made redundant. Looks like Steve got my Oxford run.
this is the chap that took over from when Barry (the mechanic) left known as Tim but not his real name
he was doing a weld job on S438BKN Also I thought I would include two shots of S309KLU after having new curtains fitted
just one more shot for now for those who remember Norfolk feather out of Thetford depot big green sacks of pillows
took this one of S309 loaded for Dunelm Swindon during the run up to the Christmas promotion
herbington:
this is the chap that took over from when Barry (the mechanic) left known as Tim but not his real name
His real name was Graham.
Those new curtains on 309 were partly my fault. They wanted to get rid of my motor (305) when Steve left. And I refused to Drive 309 in the state it was in.
End result, new curtains, new seat, steam cleaned cab interior. Result! I even had the pedal adjusted to give me more revs for pulling away.
And yes, I delivered that Dunelm. Coming up to xmas, they had 2 loads a day some days.
Edit: Chris G says hi, by the way. He asked what you were doing now?
now that I have finished the long time care of my father I can relax for a while and can catch up with a few of the things I missed
anyway here are a few more pics some people you may remember some you may not The pic of S 309 was taken up in reddish as for obvious reasons Swindon had no further use for it was taken up to reddish by my brother in law Rotherham depot for when it was open seemed to have some unusual contracts for Makro !
Roger Fawcett left after he got accepted for his dream job that he always wanted (to become a police officer) Nina along with Michelle went on to pastures new Judy went on to work with her other half over at Groundwell but came back later on when Neil Franklin returned as Swindon manager (the job that he left to become manager of Bridgend before going to Hamshall) Ken Sparrow was the depot manager a good bloke who did not mind getting his hands dirty he bought a lot of work to Swindon he was a good salesman Alan Mcneil (SP) was the scots lad in the warehouse along with Mark Love and a few others When they opened Bridgewater Ken left Swindon to run BWR and we had a chap by the name of Tony lane take over…
I do have pics of them somewhere I shall dig them out in due course but here is one of the Xmas party that was held over at the Carpenters Arms in South Marston in the foreground you have on the left Pat Bryan the chap on the right is Mel Pithers (a driver/office bod) in the background you have roger with his other half the chap in the far back is Barry Cantalow (mechanic) and the chap standing up with his back to the camera is Ken Sparrow
gazzah:
Apologies for butting in. But Did Leggett take over Blue Dart in the 70’s.I remember has a kid seeing there motors down Lee Valley Road Enfield.
Reading the other Leggetts topic on here brought back alot of memories of there motors around the area,
I’m pretty sure my dad worked for them at one point but not sure although i know he worked for Blue Dart and thats what makes me think they took them over.
Roger Fowler the car dealers where my dad brought alot of cars.
I too am butting in. Just came across these postings. My brother Bill Rust worked for Leggett’s in Lee Valley Road way back when there were Leggetts on the board. Before the firm went to artics and it did a lot of work for BX Plastics and Woolworth’s. He use d to do a trunk to Mancheste with a four wheel Dodge Luton. When he worked there they had just bought a lot of ex British Waterways depots including the one in Nottingham where the TV serial Boon was made. They got some of the early 8 cylinder Gardner Atkis. When they started going to Europe climbing the long hills made the heat from the exhaust melt the air pipes, the manifolds had to be fitted with a heat shield.
Bob
Herb. What happened to Les Regan and Tony Barker after Swindon closed?
not really sure what happened with Tony Barker it all kicked off while I was away from what I can gather there was a bust up of sorts which resulted in him leaving and we had to go and collect the company car Now as for good ole Les he got sent back to hamshall as they “needed” the staff there was then another round of cuts which resulted in les and a few others made redundant by this time the writing was well and truly on the wall for Swindon
When the depot finally shut Neil Franklin went back to Hamshall from this point it is my understanding that Neil bought back Les and a couple of others from the then defunct reddish depot to try and improve the stats and KPI for the dunelm and other contracts but alas it was to no avail as they and nike pulled out and went elsewhere
somebody mentioned little Rodney last I saw of him was back in 2004/5 he drove for us again on agency good old chap but I could never understand how he was able to see over the steering wheel
here are a few more pics of past members of staff from Swindon First off when the new loading dock was under construction we have on the left Tony Lane (manager) and the chap in the hi-vis is Kevin Robinson (warehouse supervisor) Then we have Alan Ballagh (warehouse) John Hay (long standing temp driver) Frank Galagher (night trunk driver)
also someone mentioned turbo (jerry hickman) well here he is climbing in to a motor that we had on hire while the L reg was in for repair Also I thought I would include Mick Brooks (day driver) his motor was P993 GKK till he got S430 BKN Both were used on the night trunks to Reddish/Bothwell
We did also make use of Y522 TKR this was a bridgewater motor that used to do the Enfield night trunk (BWR-SWN-ENF) and return
plus the two 17 ton rigid which were N115/6 DKR and then S437/438 BKN
thought I would post a few more pics these were taken with a cheap throw away camera so alas the quality is not so good Back in the early 2000s we were really busy to the point that we had to shut up shop as it were due to the fact we were full to the brim for a couple of nights we could only except overnight deliveries all other goods had to be held at the originating depots till the volumes had reduced not only did we have trls loaded ready to go out we also were using the trunk triple decks and double decks as storage Reddish came to our rescue by running down M/T triples so that we could fill them up with onward freight
The last pic shows what was left after loading two trls each for makro Fareham and makro Bristol At one stage we delivered to makro Poole Fareham Bristol Reading and Exeter
